Challenged Materials
At times there are materials from the library that are challenged. When this happens the following process will be followed:
The parent is informed of their rights to challenge the material. They are given space to voice their concern for the material.
The principal of the school will be notified of the challenge .
Parents may request the district Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Material form. This form will be completed and submitted to the Executive Director of Academic Innovation and Technology. The completed form will be submitted by the principal.

Once the form is submitted: Three Materials Review Committees will handle complaints from the public concerning the appropriateness of instructional materials, including library materials.
The Committees’ responsibilities will be:
To receive written complaints from members of the public concerning the appropriateness of instructional materials.
To review the materials complained of in light of the age of the students using them, the purpose of the materials, any mandatory use of the materials, their educational value, the basis for the complaint, and relevant community standards.
To render and communicate to the person bringing the complaint a written decision on the appropriateness of the challenged materials.
If the person who filed the complaint does not agree with a Committee's decision, he may appeal the decision to the Board by notifying the superintendent in writing within ten days of receipt of the Committee's decision of his desire to appeal. The notice of appeal shall state the specific bases of the disagreement. The Board will review the appeal and the Committee's decision at or before its next regular monthly meeting. The Board will take such action as it deems appropriate.
The committees will be composed as follows:
For Complaints Arising from Elementary Schools:
Three parents, each of whom must have a child enrolled in a District elementary school.
Four District elementary school teachers, each of whom shall teach a different grade level.
One District elementary school librarian.
