CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
No Phones - Phones must be kept in your bookbag or in the pocket holder at the front of the classroom. We will have a 5 minute break every class period. Phone should still remain untouched during breaktime.
Random Groups - Everyday during class you will receive a grouping card to place you in a random group. The purpose behind this random grouping strategy is to optimize our learning and our roles on academic assignments during class.
No Classroom Disruptions - My lessons will be as student centered as possible which means your learning is in your hands. The conversations during group work need to remain on the topic of math. Conversations which divert too much from math conversations are considered class disruptions. All other class disruptions will not be tolerated.
Active Participation & Working Respectfully Together - You will be working together with new people everyday. It is my expectation that you are respectful to ALL members of the class no matter how opinions and understandings vary. It is also my expectation that you are actively participating on the group work assigned that day. Every lesson given in class will be a completion grade. Thus, participation is important during class for being successful this semester in geometry. Every lesson I will also grade at least one problem for conceptional understanding. Meaning, it is also important that you as a student 1) ask questions when confused, 2) work collaboratively with peers, and 3) work towards an accurate understanding of the math topic before answering a question.
Keep a Positive Attitude About Your Math Abilities - Some problems that we encounter in geometry may be challenging for you. I urge you to never give up on yourself because sometimes it takes a second to figure something out and that is okay! Just because you don't know something immediately doesn't mean you will never know. If you're struggling and thinking, it means you are learning!
CONSEQUENCES
My classroom is a no phone zone. On the first offense of violating Expectation #1, I give you a verbal warning AND contact your parent. The second offense will be a teacher detention where we will have a brief student-teacher conference to discuss the behavior and changes which need to take place. The third offense is a referral to administration.
For all other classroom expectation violations, you will receive 2 verbal warnings before I call home. If the behavior is not corrected after I call home, you will receive a teacher detention where we will have a student-teacher conference. I will work with you to find a time when you are available. If you do not attend our agreed upon time and there is no legitimate excuse for your absence, I will write a referral to administration. If you do attend our scheduled time and the behavior is still not corrected during class, I will write a referral to administration.
