Air - B2
WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN (Standards):
Students will learn how to collect data and form opinions on how mixing and dissolving of foreign substances relates to pollution of the air.
3.E.4B.4 Define problems caused by a natural event or human activity and design devices or solutions to reduce the impact on the environment.
5.E.3B.3 Construct scientific arguments to support claims that human activities (such as conservation efforts or pollution) affect the land and oceans of Earth.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO:
In addition to signs in our car line, students on the "Clean Air Patrol" will distribute information to drivers in the car line, collect data and form opinions on the ways that human activities affect the environment.
HOW STUDENTS WILL TEACH OTHERS:
Students will publish findings in the school newsletter and also promote the B2 program by creating graphic organizers and visuals.
Water - Rain Garden
WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN (Standards):
Students will learn how weather effects the soil and the plants in our rain garden. They will learn this by observation and by experimentation. In the classroom teachers and students will use science books to enrich their knowledge of using the rain garden plants, soil differences, and materials to decrease erosion.
3.E.4B.2 Plan and conduct scientific investigations to determine how natural processes (including weathering, erosion, and gravity) shape Earth’s surface.
3.E.4B.3 Obtain and communicate information to explain how natural events (such as fires, landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or floods) and human activities (such as farming, mining, or building) impact the environment.
3.E.4B.4 Define problems caused by a natural event or human activity and design devices or solutions to reduce the impact on the environment.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO:
Students will conduct experiments in the classroom and in the rain garden. Growth in understanding will be measured through students journals and by observations.
HOW STUDENTS WILL TEACH OTHERS:
Our goal is for students to share the results of their learning with their parents and result in the establishment of additional rain gardens in our community.
Litter Prevention
WHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN (Standards):
Students will:
3.E.4B.4 Define problems caused by a natural event or human activity and design devices or solutions to reduce the impact on the environment.
3.E.4A.3 Obtain and communicate information to exemplify how humans obtain, use, and protect renewable and nonrenewable Earth resources.
5.E.3B.3 Construct scientific arguments to support claims that human activities (such as conservation efforts or pollution) affect the land and oceans of Earth.
WHAT STUDENTS WILL DO:
Students will be involved in promoting litter free zones throughout our school grounds by holding monthly litter cleanups and recording amounts of litter collected each month. Data will be announced on the morning news to involve all students faculty and staff. In addition, faculty and staff have adopted the road that runs behind our school and amounts of litter collected will be recorded and shared, so that students and families will be involved in educating our community on the need for their help in preventing litter.
HOW STUDENTS WILL TEACH OTHERS:
Students will display results of litter collections, both school collections and the teacher/staff adopt a road collections and will promote the reduction of litter through posters and morning news announcements. Students will make cameo appearances on morning news to talk about the effects of litter and help to influence behaviour change and litter reduction in the community as a whole.
