How is one student’s Chromebook identified from another student?
Each device has a serial number which has been recorded as belonging to the student in the District's Chromebook system. All students will also receive a name label for their Chromebook and Charger.
Can students remove the name identification sticker on their Chromebook or any other district issued labels or barcode?
Students should never remove any labels such as not remove your name label or barcode label on their Chromebook or charger. If labels are removed, we may not be able to identify who the device (specifically the charger) belongs to. Therefore, all barcode labels must remain on the Chromebook and charger so that fees will not be issued for losing the device.
Can they ecorate the lid with drawings and/or other stickers?
No. Cases should not be personalized with anything that is not easily removable or that may leave a sticky residue, such as stickers.
Can students take their Chromebook home?
Yes, students are expected to take their device home each night to fully charge, complete homework, study for tests and complete class projects either individually or collaboratively with their peers. It may be best to charge your Chromebook at home and leave the charger there.
What do students do when their device is not functioning properly?
Report the issue to the classroom teacher who may refer them to the Media Specialist if necessary.
Will earbuds be necessary and, if so, will they be provided?
Each student will need to supply their own earbuds.
Can students bring their own wireless mouse to use with their Chromebook?
Yes, but it is the student’s responsibility to keep up with it
Are there any areas of the school where the Chromebook will not be allowed?
Yes. The cafeteria and bathrooms are Chromebook free zones.
Will the Chromebook replace my child's textbooks?
In most instances, the District will continue using their current textbooks at this time. Several courses have access to online materials from the textbook companies and will be used where appropriate. Having a Chromebook will allow the teacher to utilize a broad range of online resources and materials.
What happens if students do not bring their Chromebook to class?
This may result in disciplinary action such as, but not limited to, silent lunch, In-School Suspensions, and Day User status. Each teacher will communicate with his/her students clear directions for class activities with or without the Chromebook.
My child has restricted Chromebook privileges. How are they supposed to complete their work?
Restriction of Chromebook privileges means a student will have access to their Chromebook at school, but may no longer take it home. Students may still have access to google apps for education and Google classroom at home on a laptop or a computer connected to the Internet to complete assignments when needed. If a student has lost all Chromebook privledges, they will be required to complete all work on paper
What if we don’t have internet at home?
While a Chromebook does require WiFi for much of its functionality, there are several features that can be utilized offline. Students and staff will receive training on what can be done without an internet connection so that time spent at home with the Chromebook is most effective. Will students be allowed to download Apps and Extensions from the Chrome Web Store?
Students are restricted from added Apps and Extensions. Approved Apps and Extensions are pushed out at the school level. Students are limited to just these Apps and Extensions.
Can the district track web history?
Yes. The district can track information on what sites students were on, when they were on them, and how long they were on those sites.
Will the district’s internet filter and privacy regulation carry over on the device at home?
Yes, the district’s internet filter will be enforced while the student is on campus as well as off campus. Students have no expectation of confidentiality or privacy with respect to any usage of a district issued Chromebook, regardless of whether that use is for district-related or personal purposes. The District may, without prior notice or consent, log, supervise, access, view, monitor, and record use of student Chromebooks at any time for any reason related to the operation of the District. By using a Chromebook, students agree to such access, monitoring, and recording of their use.
My student’s Chromebook is damaged. How do we get it repaired?
The student will bring the Chromebook to the library to get their device repaired. We will give them a repair form to be taken home, signed and returned. They will get a loaner Chromebook for that day only. When they bring back the signed repair form, we will give them a new Chromebook.
Do I have to pay for the repair?
The first accidental damage is free. Any damages accumulated after that first repair will result in the student being charged for the cost of the repair. Intentional damages will result in the student being charged for the cost of the repair, even if they have not used their accidental repair.
Please have the student bring the computer in for repair as soon as the damage is noticed. The longer the student waits to bring the computer in for repair, the more costly the repair will be as the computer gets more damaged.
If the Chromebook is intentionally damaged by the student, the student will be charged for the repair.
What do I do if we have lost the charger or if it has been damaged?
The student will need to come to the library and notify staff that the charger is lost or damaged. They will then have a charge placed on their account for the charger. A new charger will issued only once the fine is paid. If the charger is found and returned, the fine will be deleted. If the fine had already been paid, the student will be issued a refund.
How do I pay fines?
All fines can be paid with exact cash, a check made out to Greer Middle School, or using MySchoolBucks on the school website.
What do I do if we have lost the Chromebook?
The student will need to come to the library between 8:15 and 9:00 and notify the library staff. We will give them a lost/missing form that they will get filled out, signed, and returned the next day. We will also ping the last location of the Chromebook to hopefully help narrow down its location. Once the form is returned, we will disable the computer so that it cannot be used and issue a daily loaner until it is found. If the computer is not found, the student will have to pay for the cost of the computer.
My child’s Chromebook is not charged or they did not bring it to school. Can they get a loaner?
No, we do not give loaners for devices that are not charged or are left at home. Students will be given paper assignments for the day and a consequence for not having their computer. Students are not allowed to charge their computer at school and their charger should be left at home. Students who do not bring their device may have consequences given.
