First Page Fridays- (Thanks to Patti Barker and her great idea.) Many schools have been showcasing virtual book tastings on eLearning days. These are often shared through class Google Classroom's, social media, and website. Feel free to check out the links from a few different schools.
Each Friday I select a book and record a brief video introducing the book and reading the first few pages. This has been a fun alternative to book talks and has been beneficial in encouraging students to check out books form the media center more frequently and also to read more. Most weeks I get several requests for the book I shared. I also do a theme, either a series, or by a specific author, or focus on diverse characters. I send the file to the ELA teachers in my building and ask them to share via their Google Classroom. I plan to continue with this even though we will be back face to face 5 days a week in January. This allows me to share more books with more students than I could if I was solely visiting classrooms and giving a book talk.
Ugly Christmas Sweater- Each month we have a different book related library challenge. For the month of December we did a “Design an Ugly Sweater for your favorite Book Character” Challenge. Students were given a sweater template and asked to creatively design an Ugly Sweater that a character form their favorite book might wear to an Ugly Sweater Holiday parent. We have about 30 students participate and the designs were from popular books such as the Harry Potter series and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but we also had a few unique designs form books such as From the Desk of Zoe Washington and Naruto.
6th Grade Book Clubs- Bryson Middle. Thanks to a Donors Choose Grant we were able to put 10 copies of 5 different MG books: Clean Getaway by Nic Stone, Wishtree by Katherine Applegate, A Good Kind of Trouble by Lisa Moore Ramee, The Unteachables by Gordon Korman & The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart (the last three of on the current SC JBA list for 2020-21). We have had 10-12 students consistently sign up to participate in 6th Grade Book Club each month. Since we cannot meet in person, we meet via Google Meets on Friday afternoons to discuss the book and enjoy snacks that Mrs. Barker sends home specifically for our Book Club Meetings! So far we have read Clean Getaway and The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise and students will receive copy of The Unteachables to take home with them to begin reading over winter break. Students are able to keep their copy of the book when we are finished to add to their personal library and several students have even shared their copy with a friend and encouraged them to read it.
Lunch Bunch Book Club - Riverside Middle: We have both the traditional book club meetings where everyone participating reads the same book and we discuss, as well as "book talk" meetings where students can just share great books they've read recently! We put all of the student recommendations into a Collection in Destiny called "Lunch Bunch Recommends," so all students can see books recommended by their peers. We communicate to our Lunch Bunch via Google Classroom, and have recently invited students to do their own "Friday Firsts" via FlipGrid and we will be sharing those with teachers to use with their classes, along with the Friday Firsts done by our staff members and authors.
Bethel Book Award - Using a "March Madness" bracket format, we celebrated reading all year by creating the Bethel Book Award. We used the 20 nominees from the SCASL Picture Book Award plus 12 additional recently published picture books to form a total of 32 nominees for the Bethel Book Award. As the media specialist, I purchased 2-3 copies of each book and kept them in a special shelf in my office, and teachers would check out books to read as needed. All classroom teachers were given a poster of the nominees to hang in their classrooms. The goal was for each classroom to read as many of the nominees as they could during the year (I also read some of the nominees in library classes). In March, we began the bracket voting. Each week, we narrowed down the choices until we got to the final Bethel Book Award winner!
Northwest Middle School, I <3 This Book Contest
Students created a slide to share all about their favorite book. The students then presented the book to the class and gave a Book Talk about their book. Best slides were showcased on the school TV system and the school news.
