MUSIC PROGRAMS

Band

Band is an instrumental music class where students will learn to play an instrument from one of three families: Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion.

  • Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon

  • Brass: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba

  • Percussion: Drums, Xylophone, Marimba, Cymbals, Tympani... and so much more!!

Band classes may be broken up into instrument families or meet as one class, depending on the school.

Instrument Selection & Purchasing

Students who sign up for band will ultimately need an instrument. This does not mean you must go out and purchase an instrument when you sign up. Here's why:

  1. Beginning band classes provide instrument testing. This gives students a chance to try instruments before settling on one. It also helps the directors make sure you are choosing the right instrument for your unique abilities.

  2. Instruments can cost a lot. Before you buy, check with the director. Some schools may be able to loan instruments -- especially larger, more expensive ones -- to students. Directors can also recommend rental programs or a preferred retailer in the area.

  3. Not all instruments are created equal! That deal on a trumpet from a discount retailer may be appealing, but parts for it might not be so easy to come by if it needs repair. There are also different levels and styles of instruments which could cost you more than you need to if you don't know what to look for. Directors can help you choose the right instrument to get you started.

Instrument Accessories

Most musical instruments need additional accessories to work properly and stay well maintained. Reeds, oil, tape, etc. all play a part. Directors will help guide you in what kinds of things you'll need. Just ask!

Strings

Strings is an instrumental music class where students will learn to play an instrument from the orchestral strings family: Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass.

Instrument Selection & Purchasing

Students who sign up for strings will ultimately need an instrument. This does not mean you must go out and purchase an instrument when you sign up. Here's why:

  1. Instruments can cost a lot. Before you buy, check with the director. Some schools may be able to loan instruments -- especially larger, more expensive ones -- to students. Directors can also recommend rental programs or a preferred retailer in the area.

  2. Not all instruments are created equal! That deal on a viola from a discount retailer may be appealing, but the quality of a strings instrument can make a big difference in the sound. It may also be harder to get repairs and replacement parts on some instruments. Directors can help you choose the right instrument to get you started.

Instrument Accessories

Most musical instruments need additional accessories to work properly and stay well maintained. Strings, rosin, etc. all play a part. Directors will help guide you in what kinds of things you'll need. Just ask!

Chorus

Chorus is a music class where students will learn to use their voices to create beautiful music -- no instrument required! Students in chorus will learn how to improve their singing skills, train their ears, and read (perhaps even write!) music.

Students who are too shy to sing in front of others may find that chorus is exactly what they need. It gives them the opportunity to sing along with their peers in a large group. For those who love the spotlight, chorus provides the means to train, improve, and prepare for future solo opportunities.

So sing loud, sing proud, and consider chorus!
