Do you love to sing? We have so much fun performing around the school during our athletic games and community events, playing with instruments, learning about professional artists, and the history of music and its influence on the world. We also accept students into our performing show choir and this group meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school. Come join us.

Strings (AKA: Orchestra) class is a year-round class offered to students starting in the 6th grade. You must sign up in 6th grade, as you cannot join in 7th or 8th grade. Students get to learn their choice of violin, viola, cello, or bass and you do not need to have any prior musical experience to succeed in this class. We play a lot of music games in class to help us learn to read music and play our instruments and we also have many concerts and field trips to fun places like Carowinds! Students with prior experience playing a string instrument are welcome to join and audition for advanced performing groups and help serve as mentors for beginning students in their class. Signing up for Strings is a perfect way to make new friends as you start middle school and be a part of something great!

A few small supplies are also needed to play your instrument - you will spend about $20 to get these supplies.

The Beginning Band at Hillcrest Middle is comprised of students in their first year of playing a band instrument. Students do not need to know how to play an instrument to be in this class. Students will be tested to determine which instrument they are best suited to play at a Mouthpiece Testing Night. Information about Mouthpiece Testing Nights will be sent to corresponding elementary schools during the spring of the current school year. Lakeview Bands: The Pride of Lakeview - Band is a year-long course in all grades. In 6th grade, students are introduced to all major wind and percussion instruments. Students learn the fundamentals of music notation and reading, instrument care, performance, music appreciation, and overall involvement in the arts. In 7th and 8th grade, fundamentals are reinforced while adding new material to the repertoire by learning more music and mastering additional technical exercises and advanced musical expression. Performance opportunities include in-class playing, school and community concerts, solo and ensemble performances, state concert festivals, competitive auditions, and collaborative performances with other performing ensembles. This course provides beginning-level instruction on brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. No previous musical experience is required. The curriculum includes the development of fundamental skills, concepts, composition, cooperative learning, music as it relates to history and culture, and band techniques. The class will include an expectation for the purchase or rental of an instrument and individual practice at home. Concert performances will be an outgrowth of the study of musical concepts.

Chorus is a fun class where we learn to make beautiful music together and build a foundation for musical skills. We learn songs in different styles and languages and perform every semester. Our Concerts include a Halloween Concert, Winter Concert, Carowinds performance, and Spring Concert, along with other occasional performances. We also participate in Spring Sing with other schools. We get better and better each year as we stick together throughout middle school to develop into a great singing group!
