In Grades 3-5, identified gifted students can participate in a pull-out program called Challenge. Students must meet state GT criteria to participate in Challenge classes.
Every GCS elementary school offers the Challenge program with instruction delivered via a GT certified elementary teacher.
In Grades 6-8, identified gifted students can participate in special classes for English Language Arts. Gifted students who have met state GT criteria may participate in Grade 6 ELA GT, Grade 7 ELA GT, and Grade 8 English 1 Honors.
Every GCS middle school offers GT English Language Arts with instruction delivered via a GT certified middle grades English teacher.
In Grades 3-8, exceptionally gifted students may qualify to attend the Charles Townes Center at Sterling School.
Students who qualify to attend the Charles Townes Center must meet state GT criteria as well as additional criteria in aptitude, achievement, and performance.
Non-GCS Students - Aptitude Assessment Opportunity
All SC public and public charter schools evaluate their students for Gifted and Talented identification per state department guidelines.
Non-GCS students who 1) reside in Greenville County Schools’ attendance zone and 2) are served in an educational setting that does not offer aptitude testing may register to take the CogAT aptitude assessment with Greenville County Schools. The CogAT is offered at Sterling School each October on the scheduled GCS teacher workday. Registration for this special assessment is required and opens in September of each year.
