Dear Parents of RGS 5th Graders,
We are excited to announce that our school has been accepted to participate in the St. Christopher Barrier Island Education Program out on Seabrook Island, SC for the 2025-2026 school year! This program is highly-rated and sought-after by many schools and districts in South Carolina. This year’s trip has been one of the best field trips EVER, and we are THRILLED to be able to offer it to our students again next year!
The trip dates will be Monday, March 2-Wednesday, March 4, 2026!
While there, we will be participating in a variety of classes and programs that align with our SC State Science Standards. We will be learning about the ecology of the ecosystems found along our coast (the beach, wetlands, maritime forest, etc.), discovering the plants and animals that live within those ecosystems, and participating in some fun team-building activities. Everything is engaging and hands-on!
If you did not register your child back in the spring of 4th Grade, but your student would still like to sign up for the trip, we are asking for a
$100 deposit to be paid via MySchoolBucks by FRIDAY, August 22, 2025!
The final cost will depend on the total number of participants, but we anticipate it being approximately $350. This cost will include ALL meals, lodging, and transportation! Please make your deposit as soon as possible! The remaining payment schedule will be as follows:
DUE May 9 OR August 22- $100 deposit (nonrefundable)
DUE September 1- $100
DUE October 1- $100
DUE November 1- Remaining balance
We WILL be taking parent chaperones on this trip with us, but chaperone registration will not occur until the week of August 25th. Please click on this link to complete the chaperone interest form. This must be completed prior to Friday, August 22 for you to be considered as a chaperone. The exact number of chaperones will be determined based on the number of students who register by paying the initial $100 deposit. *Please note--Barrier Island requests same-gendered chaperones with students in the cabins. Same-gender parents will be prioritized pending the number of chaperones that express interest. Chaperones will be chosen and notified by September 1. Parent cost will be the same as the student cost.
If you’d like further information on the program, please visit the St. Christopher Barrier Island Website.
Should you have any questions, please direct them to Libby Wright at eewright@greenville.k12.sc.us.
We are very excited about this field trip opportunity and look forward to experience it with your student!
Sincerely,
The Rudolph Gordon 5th Grade Team
To give you a little more information about chaperoning, we only take 1 chaperone for every 3 to 5 students (For example, if 120 students attend, we are able to take 30 parents). Barrier Island also requires male chaperones to be in boys' cabins and female chaperones in the girls'. Priority IS given to Mom/Daughter and Dad/Son chaperones. *A QR code for the Parent Chaperone Interest form will be on a flyer your child received at Meet the Teacher on August 7. The link is also be posted here. That form also has all of the chaperone agreements so that chaperones know what they are signing up for. It is not an official registration, nor does it mean you're guaranteed a chaperone spot. It's merely a pool of interested parents so that we know what the level of interest is and get a rough estimate of numbers.
Below, you will find some information straight from the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program.
