This summer, Visual Arts senior, Laine Perkins was selected by Sage Automotive Interiors for their annual design internship! So far, she has spent the summer working on designing a collection of woven fabrics, embossed fabrics, and dyeing knit fabrics to be used in the automotive industry! We're so proud - biggest congratulations to Laine!!!
In May, Mrs. Dauscha taught a one week workshop in the Upper Textiles Studio at Penland School of Craft titled, "Relics and Reliquaries: embellishing objects of meaning."
Exploring the theme of personal relics, students used embellishment techniques on tulle to create a reliquary to house an object of meaning. Each student was asked to bring a variety of personal objects to choose from for creating their embellished reliquary – garments, dishes, shoes, jewelry, photographs, hair, linens, notes, toys, flowers, etc.
The goal of the workshop was to create a series of small technical samples and one artwork which was displayed at show & tell night. Technical samples included embroidery, beading, and needle-run lace techniques on tulle. For inspiration, we will looked at historical museum collections, fiber artists, personal shrines and rituals, and performance art as we develop project ideas, concepts, and sketches.

Trained as a weaver, Rachel Meginnes’s fascination with textiles began in high school. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Earlham College in 1999, Rachel followed her interest in textiles by travelling to Northern Japan to study the traditional crafts of saki-ori, ikat, and indigo dyeing. Upon returning to the States, she apprenticed as a rug weaver and continued her study of art and textiles by moving to Seattle to earn her Master of Fine Arts degree in Fibers at the University of Washington in 2005. From 2005-2011, Rachel co-owned and operated Dorjé Contemporary, LLC a custom rug design company producing hand-knotted, Tibetan carpets for the interiors trade. 2012 marked a significant shift in Rachel’s career when she dedicated herself to being a studio artist full time. This past August, she completed a three-year residency at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.
Although no longer working directly at the loom, Rachel has kept many of her weaving processes alive in her current studio practice. Integrating textiles with painting, Rachel accepts and encourages her need to work hands-on with her materials and enjoys the solitude that comes along with producing such methodical work. Her original love for the plain weave structure has never ceased and she continues to believe that there is infinite possibility in the most basic of methods.
Rachel's studio is based in western North Carolina.
Fine Arts Center (FAC) is proud to host the opening reception of the Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance's (SEFAA) exhibition, Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends. The evening will feature a presentation given by Rachel Meginnes, the announcement of award-winning artworks, and a tour of the FAC Fiber Arts studio.
Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends 2018 features the work of 23 students enrolled in high school, college, and graduate-level fiber programs throughout the Southeast.
Work in the show was selected by juror, Rachel Meginnes. Rachel is a studio artist based in Western, North Carolina, working within the media of textiles and painting. Rachel studied Fibers at the University of Washington and Earlham College and studied traditional textile processes in northern Japan. She was a Penland School of Crafts Resident Artist from 2012-2015.

"Livability explores what makes small-to-medium sized cities great places to live. Through proprietary research studies, engaging articles and original photography and video, we examine topics related to community amenities, education, sustainability, transportation, housing and the economy. We then leverage that expertise to develop city rankings for a range of topics including small towns, college towns and our annual Top 100 Best Places to Live."
