My Personal Educational Philosophy
As an educator, I believe that a student-centered classroom is most effective and beneficial for each individual student’s growth. This means that our learning content, including what we read and write about, should be individualized for each student as much as possible. I believe that students should be given choices in what they read, on how they are assessed, and on what projects they work. This is not always possible, which is why I understand the practicality of blending teacher-centered instruction with a student-centered environment. From my experiences over the last decade, I have learned that all students can learn best when what they learn is relevant to their own lives, when they become a part of a collaborative and encouraging classroom community, and when they understand the purpose of what we are doing in class. Over the first couple weeks, we will strive to foster a positive environment in which students learn about each other and come to feel comfortable learning together. In short, I plan to give my students some control over their learning and how they display their learning through a variety of projects and assessments. This may be challenging for some students because many are used to being told exactly what to learn and what to do by the teacher. However, with willingness and open-mindedness, I believe that the possibilities for learning are unlimited.
