Helpful Hints:
The following information depends on the amount of time the performer is playing every day and playing style:
Strings should be replaced at least every 6 months for upper strings. (E strings every 3 months)
Lower strings, every year
Please do not put new strings on the day of a concert, violin lesson, or rehearsal. They take time to stretch and settle.
When do I need a Bow Rehair:
This also depends on the amount of time a performer is and playing every day and playing style:
Bow hair is made out of horse hair and wears down over time
A bow should be rehaired after approximently 100 hours of playing
Bow hair may appear dirty at the frog (base of the bow) because of the natural oils in our skin
A reputable shop will let you know if your bow is worth rehairing, or not
A bow rehair usually costs around $60, however, varies from shop to shop
Make sure your take your bow to a reputable bow maker, or person who has been highly trained
