About Ms. West and her Classroom
Ms. West is dedicated to teaching her students to love and enjoy art. She also inspires and helps her students to discover art history, art production, art criticism, and aesthetics. Graduating from Furman University in 1995 with a BA in art education, she decided to continue to learn about art. Therefore, she attended Clemson University where she received a Master in Fine Arts in 1997. She received her National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate in 2003 and her renewal in 2013. Ms. West continues to create artwork including jewelry, woodblock prints, and paintings.
At Sara Collins Elementary, Ms. West leads her class in inquiry learning and collaborates with grade levels to strengthen what students are studying in their regular classrooms. While her students are learning the art standards, they are able to bring their knowledge from the regular classroom to the art room. The collaboration enhances their learning in art. Additionally, since Sara Collins is an International Baccalaureate school, students are encouraged to practice the attitudes and concepts of the program in the art studio. Students enjoy producing artwork in the art studio while also learning about famous artists, art styles, and art periods.
The art studio at Sara Collins Elementary is a thrilling place for Ms. West. Smith to learn along with her students. Ms. West hopes that her students, their parents, and the community will discover the art around them and find ways to create in the classroom and outside of the art room. Please come and see what the children are creating!
