I am Jay Adam Pearson, the Building Construction Instructor at Enoree Career Center. I am so excited to begin my fifth year with Greenville County Schools. Like many instructors in Career and Technical Education (CTE), I did not begin as an educator. My path to Enoree Career Center began at Eastern Wayne High School in 1978 where I enrolled in carpentry classes. Additionally, both of my grandfathers were carpenters/house builders in South Carolina and Kentucky. After high school I worked for East Gate Construction Company beginning in their formal Apprentice Carpenter Program. After working a few years, I joined the United States Air Force in 1983. While in the USAF I was deployed several times at home and abroad. I was honorably discharged in 1986 and returned to Inman S.C. to make my home. While working as a carpenter, fate handed me a great opportunity to work at Greenville Technical College in 1987 as an Adjunct Instructor. I continued to work in construction and teach at night until 1996 when I was hired full time. This began my journey as a full time educator. I was honored at that time to be mentored by Dr. Thomas Barton, Greenville Technical College President. I hired great faculty, and we began building a viable curriculum. Shortly thereafter, I was honored to be selected as one of 16 Subject Matter Experts (SME) in building construction in the United States, and tasked by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) with developing a sustainable curriculum which would be implemented across the United States, but specifically in all career centers in South Carolina. Our committee wrote the Core Curriculum, and Carpentry Level One, Level Two, and Masonry Curriculum. I served as the lead writer for the plumbing and cabinet making curriculum. After successfully building one of the best Building Construction programs in the southeast while earning my Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, and Masters in Business Administration (MBA), I wanted a new challenge. I joined the math department at Emerald High School (Go Vikings!) to teach Algebra. This was one of the most rewarding experiences in my career. This ignited a passion to teach younger students since I had only previously taught at the college level. Together we made many great strides at Emerald High School. A couple years later, once again, higher education came calling. I was hired as Department Head at Piedmont Tech to revise and build a program teaching residential and light construction. I had many great experiences at PTC, however I longed to teach high school students once again. When the position at Enoree Career Center became available I applied and was hired . Working with a great group of educators , and administration has provided great challenges and great rewards. As a life long learner my focus is on being the best educator that I can become through attending Professional Development here at Greenville County Schools and through South Carolina's Department of Education.
