Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is the first foundation course for students who may be interested in a career in Engineering. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an Engineering Notebook to document their work. The 2017-18 syllabus for IED is available at the end of this page.
Students in IED spend a significant portion of the semester learning Computer-Aided Design, or CAD, using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2016. This software is provided free to all students through Autodesk's Education Community. Students also have access to video resources and more via the Autodesk Design Academy, as well as custom instructional videos put together by the engineering teachers at Wade Hampton HS.
Additionally, starting in 2017 students enrolled in IED at Wade Hampton will have the opportunity to take the Autodesk Inventor Certified User Exam.
