Description of Students
The Multilingual Learner (ML) program at Woodland is comprised of approximately 300 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. These students are identified as English Language Learners and are eligible to receive support services through ESOL.
Standards/Learning & Developmental Goals
Goal: To increase the knowledge of the English language
-Reading strategies include letter recognition, sounds, sight words, family words, rhymes, and content area vocabulary words.
-The students will speak, hear, read and write the English language.
-English language level (low-high) reading books on various topics, fiction and non-fiction, are used to increase students’ exposure to literature.
-Writing activities show understanding of word usage.
-Reading strategies such as picture reading, sounding out words, chunking words, and use of content are used to increase students’ understanding of literature.
Units of Instruction
My first grade students are instructed using the Lexia English mini-lessons, the Reach Into Phonics literacy curriculum, picture cards, letter cards, small readers and teacher-created materials. Comprehension strategies and basic sight vocabulary are also utilized in the ML classroom. Newcomers are instructed using the Our World Newcomer curriculum.

Lexia English online program, Reach Into Phonics, Our World curriculum, leveled readers, paper, pencils, picture dictionaries, student dictionaries, computers, phonics books, classroom library books, and writing notebooks.
Assessment Procedures/Evaluation of Student Progress
~Initial placement in the ML program is assessed using the Kindergarten WIDA Screener or the WIDA Online Screener for students 1st-12th grades
~Students are assessed each spring using the WIDA ACCESS assessment
- Progress Monitoring using Lexia English 3 times a year.
Rules for Behavior
Students are to abide by the school-wide Leader in Me discipline plan while in the ML classroom.
Communication with Parents
A Parent Notification letter is sent home at the beginning of the year informing parents of their child’s participation in the ML program along with a copy of their current ACCESS scores or screener scores. Parents can also call or email if there are questions about their child's progress or it they have questions about the ML program.
