About the Teacher

My name is Debbie Holtzclaw and I am so excited to be your child’s first grade teacher. I grew up in Marietta, South Carolina. I attended Slater-Marietta Elementary, Slater-Marietta High School (until we consolidated with TR), and graduated from Travelers Rest High School. I continued my education at Carson-Newman University and graduated with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education and completed my Master's degree from Columbia College in Divergent Learning. I have also completed 30+ hours above a Master’s degree from Furman, Clemson, and USC. This is my 32nd year of teaching and I am considered to be highly qualified in early childhood education which is first through third grade. I taught for 13 years at Monaview Elementary and this is my 19th year teaching at SMES. It is such a special privilege to be able to teach in my hometown and share life experiences with my students and their families.

I have been married to my husband, Scott Holtzclaw, for 36 years. We have a son and a daughter who are both married. We are blessed with three precious grandchildren through my son's family. Our daughter and her husband recently moved back to SC after living in the freezing temperatures of North Dakota. It’s such a blessing and so exciting to see our family grow!

When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, walking, traveling, cooking, and participating in the ministries of my church. I stay very busy but I am thankful to be involved in the many opportunities of life.
