Course Description:
The educational support class is designed to develop, strengthen, and improve skills for positive academic performance and achievement. Instructional emphasis is on improvement in reading, writing, and math. Additionally, self-advocacy skills and transitional planning are also part of the instructional program.
The resource class involves direct instruction, small group learning, and individualized instruction. During direct instructional time, students are taught learning strategies to help improve academic performance in core academic courses. The time remaining in the tutorial setting is devoted to small group and individualized instruction, self-directed learning, and assistance with core content class work. Strategies of instruction are individualized according to the student’s learning style and academic areas of need. Computers, writers, graphic organizers, verbal and visual cues, and peer learning are used to support deficit areas.
Students' progress is monitored and reviewed throughout the year according to their IEPs (Individualized Educational Plans).
Course Objectives:
1. Students will improve study skills and test taking skills.
2. Students will practice self-assessment and self-advocacy.
3. Students will strengthen time management skills and prioritize assignments for all courses so as to complete work in a timely manner.
4. Students will maintain passing grades by utilizing allotted class time to work on assignments and tests from other classes.
Course Outcome:
The goal of this tutorial course is the mastery of IEP goals and improved academic performance in core academic courses and elective courses. This course is designed to help students gain better study skills, to self-monitor their progress in other courses, and to assist them in passing their core curriculum courses.
Expectations:
Students will come to class prepared. Students will exhibit appropriate classroom behavior. Students will participate. Students will complete assigned work and review/complete assignments from their content-area classes.
Success:
In order to be successful in the Educational Support class:
Attend class daily.
Follow classroom rules.
Utilize time wisely.
Ask for help.
Grades: Student progress is cumulatively assessed each nine weeks in the following way:
60 Percent: Major Grades - Major Assessments, Major Assignments and Projects
40 Percent: Minor Grades - Formative Assessments, Minor Quizzes, and Classwork
Grading Scale: A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 50-59
Classroom Rules and Policies:
1. Be prompt.
2. Be prepared for class.
3. Be respectful and kind.
4. Be attentive.
5. Be responsible and participate.
Disciplinary Action - Four step disciplinary policy.
The steps are progressive and outlined as follows:
1. Step One – Conference with student, warning.
2. Step Two – Phone conference with parent
3. Step Three - Referral written; detention assigned.
4. Step Four – Referral to principal.
* Extreme offenses will bypass all steps and will be referred immediately to the principal.
