Course Description
This course is designed to introduce a variety of physical activities with an emphasis on rules, skill development and spatial awareness needed for games, activities, sports and fitness. This emphasis provides students with an understanding of the benefits of physical activity and will help them develop an appreciation and a desire to reach their own peak of physical fitness.

Course Objectives
The student will develop competency in as many movement forms as possible.
The student will meet the Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) standards of the FitnessGram (5th grade only).
The student will learn rules and skills needed to play a variety of games, activities and sports.
South Carolina Content Standards
Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4: The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Standard 5: The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
All units of instruction will be aligned with state standards by number.
Each unit will include:
Skills necessary to perform the activity. (1)
Rules of the activity. (2)
Vocabulary words related to the activity. (3)
Practice drills for the activity. (1,2,3)
Modified and regulation-style games. (1,2,3,4,5)
Each unit will include practice in the following skills:
Motor skill development (1,3)
Tactical awareness (2,3)

Sportsmanship (4,5)
Evaluation of Student Progress
Standards-based Assessments
These assessments may be formal or informal, performance oriented based on skill development. Rubrics and checklists may be used.
Active Class Participation and Effort
Students are on-task and actively engaged in standards-based learning experiences. Effort refers to energy expended to achieve competency. Effort also includes teamwork, sportsmanship, cooperation, and following procedures to complete tasks.
Wearing Athletic Shoes
Students should wear shoes appropriate for physical activity in order to participate safely in class activities.
Fitness tests are given at the beginning and end of the year, so that students can measure their fitness levels and reach accepted goals before the end of the year. (5th grade only)
Parents will be contacted if students do not participate or wear athletic shoes regularly. All students are expected to participate in class activities unless a note is provided from a doctor, parent, or school nurse. Exceptions will be made if the student gets sick at school and talks to his/her teacher at the beginning of class. Records are kept of days not prepared and days not participating in class activities.

Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines
Students enter the gym suits and sit on their assigned spot in the gym and roll is taken. Attendance is followed by introduction of skills from the teacher. When appropriate, play begins immediately after warm-ups.
In the event of a fire drill, earthquake drill, tornado drill, or bomb threat, etc. students will leave the gym in an orderly fashion with their teacher and will follow all appropriate procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook.
Parental Communication
Parents/legal guardians of students will be contacted in the following ways:
Quarterly report cards
Telephone calls and/or emails
Parent/Teacher conferences, when needed
Tentative Course Outline (This schedule may change due to weather, school events, etc.)
***In addition to the activities listed below, exercises and laps will be incorporated each day to increase the students’ cardiovascular fitness level, flexibility and muscular strength & endurance.
