Homework- I do not assign weekly homework. Students are expected to study and prepare for the spelling test and the upcoming assessments. I will be sending home a monthly reading calendar to reinforce reading practice at home.
Extra Practice- Please visit my website for resources under the Resources tab. Here you will find various activities for reading, math, and enrichment. If you need any resources printed out, please reach out to me.
Water Bottle and Snack- Please send in a water bottle with a lid and a healthy snack. Only water is allowed in class.
Grading System- Second grade is the 1st year that students will receive letter grades for assignments and report cards. I do my best to keep Backpack up to date with grades. The majority of graded work will be sent home after they have been entered. All major district assessments (math and reading tests) cannot be sent home. If there is a specific assessment grade you are concerned about, please let me know and we can schedule a time for you to come in and view the assessment.
Spelling Words- Your student will have a total of 5 spelling quizzes per quarter. Spelling words will be sent home with your child and on the weekly newsletter. Please take some time to practice these words with them to ensure success on the spelling quizzes. Spelling quizzes will consist of the 10 words of the week and 2 sentences that will involve the words. These sentences will be graded based on capitalization rules, punctuation, and correct spelling of the spelling word. After quizzes are entered into the grade-book, students will bring them home for you to look over and keep.
Birthdays- Birthdays are an exciting event for students that we look forward to celebrating. However, due to the increasing number of children with severe allergies and dietary restrictions, absolutely no food items may be sent in for birthdays (cupcakes, candy, etc). We have special traditions in class that we will do to celebrate your child. If you would like to send in a non-food item, please get with me beforehand and we can work to set aside time. If your child has a summer birthday, we will make sure to celebrate them before school ends! IMPORTANT to note: Unless the whole class is invited(or all of one gender), please handle all birthday invitations outside of school to avoid hurt feelings or distractions.
Missed Work- If your child is sick and they need to miss school, they will be able to make up their work when they return. Most of the assignments in second grade require background instruction and directions to complete. Please allow your child to recover and work on completing work when they return to school.
