Audition Information
ARMES NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR ARE NOW OPEN!
Nominations for the 2024-2025 ARMES program opens February 1, 2024 and closes March 28, 2024.
Rising 3rd through 8th grade students may be nominated by a teacher, parent, self or others.
New AND returning students must submit a nomination form by the April 4, 2024 deadline.
Auditions will be held April 22-May 3, 2024 and are required for new AND returning students.
Students may apply to audition at only one ARMES site and to only two programs at the site.
Students may not participate in more than one program if accepted into multiple.
If applying to multiple programs a separate nomination form must be completed for each.
ARMES Site Supervisors will be in contact to set up an audition time.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
elementary music - all sites
Sing "America/My Country Tis of Thee" - starting pitch will be given.
Match Pitch - The teacher will sing or play a short melody and the student will sing it back on "La." There will be one practice example and then two exercises students will complete for scoring.
Echo Clap - The teacher will clap rhythms and the student will clap the rhythms back. All of the exercises will be in 4/4 time. There will be one practice example and then two exercises students will complete for scoring.
Rhythm Reading - Students will be given two rhythm examples and asked to clap what they see.
visual art - all sites
Students will complete a still drawing onsite during the audition.
Students will complete an individual creative drawing onsite during the audition.
theatre - all sites
Elementary students should attend auditions in clothes they feel comfortable moving in. They will be working in groups to create a scene based on a specific prompt so they can demonstrate their creativity, and ability to collaborate with peers.
Middle school students will present a monologue from a selected list that will be provided by the instructor prior to the audition.
Students will participate in group improvisation.
dance - central site only
Students will audition in small groups.
Dancers will be led through a warm up to get the body moving.
Dancers will learn multiple sequences, some in the center and some going across the floor.
Dancers will be scored on their technique, musicality and creativity.
Dancers will not be asked to show a “solo,”
creative writing - central site only
Students will compile a portfolio of their best work in the areas of short fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, and will turn it in at the time of the audition.
During the audition students will complete a 45-minute timed writing. In this writing students will compose a story based on a prompt handed out at the audition. This piece will be evaluated for its creativity, the student's ability to develop plot and character, voice, use of literary devices, and written conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.).
Students will complete a 5 minute interview with a creative writing teacher.
strings - central site only
Strings 1 - Sing one song of the student's choice, repeat three given rhythms, repeat three given melodies.
Strings 2 - Play one scale: choose any one octave, one solo piece (recommended level Suzuki Book 1 to 2), one melodic sight reading, one rhythmic sight reading.
Strings 3 - Play one scale: choose any two octave major or minor scale - demonstrate shifting to a different position, one solo piece (recommended level Suzuki Book 2 to 3), one melodic sight reading, one rhythmic sight reading.
Strings 4 - Play one scale: choose any two to three octave major or minor scale - if playing 2 octaves it must include a shift to a different position - recommended 3 octave scales (Violin - G Major/A minor, Viola/Cello: C Major/D minor), one solo piece (recommended level Suzuki Book 3 to 4), one melodic sight reading, one rhythmic sight reading.
