All students have the opportunity to read any of the twenty Young Adult Book Award (YABA) books for the current school year all semester for extra credit.
Click the link at the bottom of this page to see a brochure with this year's eligible books. Approximately three copies of each title are available in the EHS Media Center. Physical and/or digital books, as well as audio books, may also be available through the Greenville County Library.
To earn extra credit, students read a YABA book and then go to the EHS Media Center to discuss the book with a media center specialist, who asks approximately 10 questions about the book to determine if students receive credit for the book.
Extra credit is only added at the end of the nine weeks after all grades have been entered so that it can be added to the grade(s) that will raise the student’s overall quarter grade the most.
For each book, a student will receive extra credit in ONE of the following ways, depending on which option raises the overall quarter grade the most, with the quarter grade raising a minimum of one point for each book read.
lowest minor grade raised to 100
5 points added to a major grade
More than one extra credit book can be applied to the same major grade. For example, if a student scores a 70 on a major grade and reads two extra credit books, the extra credit for both books could be added to the 70 if adding the credit in that way raises the quarter grade the most.
Any other available extra credit opportunities will be announced throughout the semester.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that parents/guardians approve of student self-selected reading choices from the YABA book list.
