WELCOME TO READ 180! This course is designed to help students become stronger, more confident readers and writers. Throughout the year, students will build reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, writing skills, and critical thinking through engaging texts, technology, and teacher-led instruction.
Our goal is to help every student grow as a reader while developing the skills needed for success in all subject areas.
Course Description
READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention program that combines:
Whole-group instruction
Small-group teacher-led lessons
Independent reading
Instructional software
Writing and vocabulary practice

Expand academic vocabulary.
Develop stronger writing skills.
Use reading strategies to understand complex texts.
Build confidence and independence as readers.

Students are expected to:
Come to class prepared every day.
Bring a charged Chromebook and headphones.
Participate respectfully in all activities.
Stay on task during rotations.
Read independently during assigned reading time.
Complete all assignments to the best of their ability.

Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for success. Because READ 180 lessons build on one another, students should attend class daily and make up any missed assignments promptly.
Classroom Procedures
Students should:
Enter quietly and begin the Bell Ringer.
Follow rotation schedules promptly.
Use technology responsibly.
Respect classmates, teachers, and classroom materials.
Ask questions and actively participate.
Other Information
Reading Inventory - The Reading Inventory is a computer-based test that assesses student reading level for program placement. The students will take 3 times throughout the year to measure progress.
Beginning of Year: August 13th - 31st
Mid-Year: December 1st - 16th
End-of-Year: March 30th - April 15th
Computers - Students use topics on the computer to practice reading
comprehension, spelling, proofreading and word attack skills. Each topic guides
the students through six zones: Explore, reading, Language, Fluency, Writing,
Success. Students must complete activities in each zone in order to reach the
Success Zone and move to the next reading passage.
Expectations-
1. Log on as soon as they get to the computer.
2. Start in the reading zone and try to work some in each zone (reading, word, and spelling zones)
3. Students will not be able to get into the Success Zone until you master all 5 zones.
4. Make sure you read clearly and fluently into the microphone.
5. Other than recording your passages and words, there should be NO TALKING. If students have questions or problems, they must raise their hand.
6. STAY ON READ 180. YOU DON’T HAVE PERMISSION TO GO TO ANY
OTHER WEBSITE, UNLESS DIRECTED TO DO SO.
7. NEVER touch anyone else’s equipment!
Independent Reading - Students use the Reading Counts program to take quizzes on the computer. When a student completes a book and its writing activities, they will take a quiz to test their knowledge of the book. Students must reread the book and re-take the quiz if they score less than 70%. ● Once you start a book, you need to finish it. Don’t skip around with the books ● SIT UP while you read. NO SNOOZING!

Families can support student success by:
Encouraging daily reading.
Discussing books and articles at home.
Monitoring assignment completion.
Ensuring students bring a charged Chromebook and headphones to school.
Communicating with the teacher when concerns arise.
