Social Studies uses a special grading system called standards-based mastery. This means students get graded on how well they meet specific learning goals. Studies show this kind of grading helps students understand their own learning better and do better in school.
In social studies students complete quarter long projects that teach the Michigan State Standards. These will be marked as project milestones in Powerschool. At the end of the project, students will create a final project that shows everything they’ve learned.
Here’s how final grades are calculated:
Standards Mastery: 90% (project milestones, quizzes and final products)
Class Engagement: 10% (completing classwork and daily warm ups, participating in class activities and group-work)
These are based on standards and used to assess students learning during the project.
This shows the percentage that will appear on Powerschool and is used to calculate final grades.
Late Work Policy – Social Studies
All graded assignments are posted in Google Classroom with their due dates. If you are absent, check Google Classroom to see what you missed and complete the work at home or when you return. Assignments also appear on the Google Calendar linked to our class website.
Please check Google Classroom or the class website and PowerSchool regularly to stay on top of your work.
Important: Late work must be turned in within three weeks of the due date. After that, it will not be accepted—no matter the reason.
Students are not assigned homework in this class. However, any classwork that isn’t finished during the school day should be completed at home through Google Classroom.
If your child cannot access Google Classroom from home, please email me at kelly.francisco@greenspireschool.org. I’m always happy to print assignments or help with login issues.
