Reasons to join Vancouver's Climate Hub
Of the 3,608 local governments in Canada:
4.2% have set a GHG reduction target
0.6% have signed the UN Compact of Mayors
0.08% have committed to 100% renewable energy by 2050
International accords - though essential - are insufficient to achieve reduction targets. Citizens, businesses, and civil society actors must step up to support implementation.
Municipalities are key in the fight against climate change. They have jurisdiction over transport, waste-management, building bylaws, and land-use planning, and can act as laboratories to experiment before solutions are scaled up.
Elected officials need to be aware that people are looking at the numbers. City officials and citizens also need to be aware that each other are asking for these numbers. This is beneficial. We want cities to see that everyone is pushing for change and are wanting information.
