Choose a gummy creature you want to be.
Pick a color paper that describes your gummy creature.
Fold the paper in half the tall way, and cut at the fold.
You will get two strips like this.
Overlap a bit of the paper at one end so it becomes one long piece.
Then attach it together with a stapler or tape.
Fit the paper around your head to get the size just right,
and staple or tape it into a crown.
You can also cut to change it into a different shape.
I cut mine curvy, to make it look like ocean waves, since the gummy I chose is a seahorse.
Gummy creatures are made of curvy lines and shapes, not sharp.
Sketch your gummy creature nice and big with a pencil on a color piece of paper.
Artist Tip: Choose a color that describes your creature. I chose orange, since some seahorses are orange.
Cut out your creature with a scissor.
With markers you can add details if you choose to do so.
I wanted to add other shapes and colors to attach my gummy creature to, so that it will be nice and bold for people to see.
Here is how I did it...
Fold a piece of paper in half,
cut half a circle.
Do the same with another color piece of paper,
This time the circle a bit smaller.
Overlap them together,
and it looks like a circular shield.
Glue the gummy creature onto the circle...
And you've got yourself a gummy shield!
Just like with color paper, sketch your gummy creature nice and big with a pencil on a white piece of paper.
Color it in well with markers.
Artist Tip: Look at the gummy creature images from last week to figure out what color your gummy is .
Cut out your creature with a scissor.
Glue the gummy creature onto the circle...
And you've got yourself a gummy shield!
Because you are going to move around a lot during the performance,
we need to add something to hold the hat well on your head.
Cut two long pieces of string or ribbon.
Tape them down on the inside of your hat, one on each side.
Artist Tip: really rub your tape down so it will stay.
It will look like this when done.
Put your hat on, tie the string or ribbon to your chin and you're good to go!
Violet created a gummy tiger by just making the head but with lots of details.
Benjamin already has a helmet for his costume, so instead of a hat he made a gummy belt.
Fin turned his hat into a sash, then made a mask.
Some students also added a tail to their costume.
Gummy bears Gummy fish Gummy turtles
Gummy starts Gummy sharks Gummy seahorse
Gummy stars Gummy spiders Gummy fruits
Sketch your gummy Big with a pencil on a white piece of paper.
Artist TIp: All gummy creatures are made of curvy lines.
Color it in with markers.
Cut out the gummy, as close as possible so no white paper is showing.

This type of screen works great since it is adjustable and doubles up. All screens are also easily washable.
If you don't have any screens, try a strainer. Go to "How To" Bowl for instructions.
(a day or two, depending on the weather and thickness of the paper)
press into when squeezing out the water
while in the blender
press into when squeezing out the water
This will make it easy to get the paper pulp out of the bowl once dry.
(a day or two)
while blending in the blender.
9"x12" or larger paper
Scissors
Pencils and/or Pen
Sharpies, Colored pencils or Markers
Start with a blank piece of paper.
Fold it in three sections.
Fold the paper so only the top section shows.
Person #1 draw a head and neck,
any type of head and neck.
Important!! Don't show the drawing to others, otherwise it will not be a surprise at the end.
Make sure you extend a little bit of the neck over the fold, onto the next page.
Important!! At each step, keep the paper folded so you will not see the drawings of the previous person.
Person #2 take over.
Begin drawing from where Person #1 left off.
Draw the body and arms.
It can be any type of body and arm.
Do the same thing as Person #1,
Make sure you extend a little bit of the body or arm over the fold, onto the next page.
Person #3 take over.
Begin from where Person #2 left off
and draw the legs, feet or shoes.
It can be any type of legs, feet or shoes.
At the very end
Open up the drawing and see!
Artist Tip: If there are more than 3 people, fold the paper more times and divide more body parts.
Example: for 5 people, fold the paper in 5 sections. Divide drawing into 5 sections like the head, neck, upper body, lower body, legs.
Fold the piece of paper evenly into 3.
Cut it into 3 even sections on both sides like so,
So you have 6 flaps.
Draw a full body at the center.
Make sure head and neck is within the top section,
Body and arms within the second section,
Legs and feet within the botton section.
Fold the top right flap down.
and draw a different head.
Do the same for the top left flap.
All together you will get 3 heads.
Do the Same for each part.
You will get...
3 bodies
3 legs and feet.
ALL TOGETHER
You will get
9 parts.
Add Color.
Then play with the different combinations by flipping the flaps!
This week on Thursday or Friday at 2pm will be a Live ArtsLab session
(there will be no new lesson posted on here)Please collect any or all of these things for an activity together.

You can collage or draw eyes, nose mouth, and attach ears.
Cut a hole for your eyes so you can see.
Cut out a hole in the center of the paper plate, so your face can become a part of the mask.
You can also cut out a hole in the center, cut and attach ears, and you got yourself an animal headdress!
The pieces are painted and glued together

Hole puncher or anything sharp to make a hole
Artist Tip: The cut curved part of the egg carton should be at the bottom of your nose to fit well.
Here is another way to tell a story...
Puppets!
You can try creating all of the different ways of making a puppet, or just one or two.
You can also try creating just one charcter or many
and put on a puppet show!
It can be people, animal, or made up.
It can be people, animal, or made up.
Example: I want the beak and wings of the bird to move, the tail and head I am not sure yet.
Artist Tip: Tape the parts you don't want to move first. Then tape the stick on well and sturdy.
Example: I decided I want the tail and head to be still, so I taped those together well.
Artist Tip: make sure you have enough space on all sides, so the hole will not rip.
Artist Tip: If you don't have a hole puncher, you can use anything that's pointy and sharp to make a hole.
Artist Tip: Make sure it is wound tight and loose enough so that the parts are movable just right.
Example: I have 4 sticks because there in the main holder on the body, 1 each for the wings and one for the lower beak.
Here is an idea for an extension of this lesson...
Shadow Puppets!
Watch the video to learn an easy way to make shadow puppets and a theatre from a cardbaord box.

You can also find lots of other art activity ideas at the below website.
It is divided into age groups and varied enough for all different skill levels.
Watch what can be created on a fence with tape.
Large drawing all with black tape!
Artist Tip:
Construction paper or any kind of paper works, but the thicker the better.
Less sticky the tape, the better, so it will be easy to peel.
Artist Tip:
Overlap and criss-crossing the tape will give you more you can color in.
Artist Tip:
Make sure it's just a little bit of water and you keep dipping a little bit at a time. Or the paper will rip.
Artist Tip:
If you don't have chalk, you can use crayons or markers, but without the water.
Artist Tip: make sure it is chalk, so it can be washed away to make another one.

If you don't have markers you can also use colored pencils as well as paints. If you have collage materials like construction paper or recycled paper, you can use those too!
Fold the paper in half.
Go to Step 4 if you want large size.
Go to Step 2 if you want smaller size.
Fold it again and cut it in half.
I used 4 pieces of letter size paper here, which gave me 8 pieces.
Stack each pieces of paper like this- one page facing up, the other page facing down.
Glue each page together at the fold and around the edges .
Keep going until all of your pages are glued together into an accordion shape.
Fold the accordion book closed, cut it in any shape.
The shape can relate to your story.
Example: My story is about fishies, so I cut it in the shape of a fish's head, which is also a fish bowl shape.Important: Do not cut off all of the folded edges to the right and to the left. If you do, the pages will no longer be connected.
If you don't want a hard cover, you are done at Step 7.
If you do want a hard cover, trace the front end and back end to the thick paper and cut.
Make two- one for the front of the book, the other for the back of the book.
Glue the cover to the front end and the back end, and you have an accordion book!
If you would like, please take a pic of the work you create and email to:
