Book Club meets monthly before school at 7:00 A.M.
Book Club is for grades 9-12 and began in September of 2023. This month's selection is "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah. We will meet next on June 16th, 2025 to discuss and eat breakfast together!
Summary: France, 1939 - In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.
Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France―a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.
Book Club Meeting- May 1st, 2024
Instead of having our traditional book club meeting, we traveled to Teen Lit Mob at Brattleboro Union High School for a field trip. When we were there, we got to meet "Gather" Author Kenneth Cadow and watched him be interviewed by students. Book Club members got their books signed, shopped a book store, and attended workshops about creative writing led by other esteemed authors.
"Gather" was a tough book to get into at first due to the writing style, but it was tough to put down once you got going. It felt like a really accurate portrayal of some students in Vermont.
This group gave "Gather" by Kenneth Cadow 7 out of 10 stars!
Summary: Winner of the Kirkus Prize, A National Book Award Finalist, A Michael L. Printz Honor Book, Vermont Reads Book Award

Even if the community comes together to help him, would Ian and Gather have a home to return to?

We enjoyed bagels and chatted about "Heist Royale". This was a super fun sequel. We didn't enjoy it quite as much as the original, but it was still a wild ride. It had great twists and kept us on our toes!

Book Club Meeting- March 13th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Thieves' Gambit". This book was wildly fun! There were insane twists and turns. The "bad guy" at the end truly shocked us. We were on the edge of our seats the entire read! We enjoyed it so much, we decided to read the sequel next!
This group gave "Theives' Gambit" by Kayvion Lewis 10 out of 10 stars!

Book Club Meeting- February 7th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Check & Mate". We were excited to read a realistic fiction romance. Most of us have absolutely no idea how to play chess, and although we still don't, we enjoyed this read! Other than the main characters annoying family, we liked how this story played out and the romance between the two characters felt real.
This group gave "Check & Mate" by Ali Hazelwood 9 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
Mallory Greenleaf is done with chess. Every move counts nowadays; after the sport led to the destruction of her family four years earlier, Mallory’s focus is on her mom, her sisters, and the dead-end job that keeps the lights on. That is, until she begrudgingly agrees to play in one last charity tournament and inadvertently wipes the board with notorious “Kingkiller” Nolan Sawyer: current world champion and reigning Bad Boy of chess.
Nolan’s loss to an unknown rook-ie shocks everyone. What’s even more confusing? His desire to cross pawns again. What kind of gambit is Nolan playing? The smart move would be to walk away. Resign. Game over. But Mallory’s victory opens the door to sorely needed cash-prizes and despite everything, she can’t help feeling drawn to the enigmatic strategist....
As she rockets up the ranks, Mallory struggles to keep her family safely separated from the game that wrecked it in the first place. And as her love for the sport she so desperately wanted to hate begins to rekindle, Mallory quickly realizes that the games aren’t only on the board, the spotlight is brighter than she imagined, and the competition can be fierce (-ly attractive. And intelligent…and infuriating…)
Book Club Meeting- January 10th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Ruthless Vows". This book picked up almost right where "Divine Rivals" left off. We loved dicing back into this fantasy world, where we learned much more about the background of the war and the characters at large. It had plenty of twists and turns and we loved every minute!
This group gave "Ruthless Vows" by Rebecaa Ross 9 out of 10 stars!

Book Club Meeting- December 6th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Accountable". This book was our first non-fiction book as a group, and many found it tough to get into at first. But once we did, there was no stopping us! This was a fascinating read, and we felt like we learned so much.
This group gave "Accountable" by Dashka Slater 7 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
When a high school student started a private Instagram account that used racist and sexist memes to make his friends laugh, he thought of it as “edgy” humor. Over time, the edge got sharper. Then a few other kids found out about the account. Pretty soon, everyone knew.
Ultimately no one in the small town of Albany, California, was safe from the repercussions of the account’s discovery. Not the girls targeted by the posts. Not the boy who created the account. Not the group of kids who followed it. Not the adults—educators and parents—whose attempts to fix things too often made them worse.
In the end, no one was laughing. And everyone was left asking: Where does accountability end for online speech that harms? And what does accountability even mean?
Award-winning and New York Times–bestselling author Dashka Slater has written a must-read book for our era that explores the real-world consequences of online choices.
Book Club Meeting- October 30th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Where He Can't Find You". This was our first horror book we have read as a group. Some have decided that it's really not for them- it was too tricky for some to suspend reality enough to truly enjoy the scare factor. Although a fun and creepy read, it felt a tad predictable.
This group gave "Where He Can't Find You" by Rebecca Ross 6 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
DON'T WALK ALONE, OR THE STITCHER WILL FIND YOU.
Abby Ward lives in a town haunted by disappearances. People vanish, and when they're found, their bodies have been dismembered and sewn back together in unnatural ways. But is it the work of a human killer…or something far darker?

DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES, OR THE STITCHER WILL REMAKE YOU.
With every hour precious, Abby and her friends are caught in a desperate game of cat and mouse. They have to get Hope back. Quickly. Before too much of her is cut away. And before everything they care about is swallowed up by the darkness waiting in the tunnels beneath the home they thought they knew.
Book Club Meeting- September 27th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "Divine Rivals". This was our first fantasy book we have read as a group and overall, we really enjoyed it! Some of us had some trouble diving into the fantasy realm that Ross created at first, but just like the romance, this book is a bit of a slow burn. We loved the male main character and have decided we want to read the sequel! The cliffhanger was too much!
This group gave "Divine Rivals" by Rebecca Ross 8 out of 10 stars!

Book Club Meeting- May 30th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "The Lost Ticket". We LOVED THIS BOOK! We thought the characters were interesting (and some were downright awful). The premise was so unique, and it really sticks with you! We've all been thinking about this book since the moment we finished it. This and "The Paper Girl of Paris" are tied for our favorite books of the year.
This group gave "The Lost Ticket" by Freya Sampson 10 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
When Libby Nicholls arrives in London, brokenhearted and with her life in tatters, the first person she meets on the bus is elderly Frank. He tells her about the time in 1962 that he met a girl on the number 88 bus with beautiful red hair just like hers. They made plans for a date at the National Gallery art museum, but Frank lost the bus ticket with her number on it. For the past sixty years, he’s ridden the same bus trying to find her, but with no luck.
Libby is inspired to action and, with the help of an unlikely companion, she papers the bus route with posters advertising their search. Libby begins to open her guarded heart to new friendships and a budding romance, as her tightly controlled world expands. But with Frank’s dementia progressing quickly, their chance of finding the girl on the 88 bus is slipping away.
More than anything, Libby wants Frank to see his lost love one more time. But their quest also shows Libby just how important it is to embrace her own chances for happiness—before it’s too late—in a beautifully uplifting novel about how a shared common experience among strangers can transform lives in the most marvelous ways.
Book Club Meeting- April 30th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "The Inheritance Games". We really liked this book! It had a lot of twists and turns. There were very vivid characters, and none of us could decide who our favorite Hawthorn Brother was. We thought the house was so cool, and many of the characters were unhinged but interesting. A few of us have already started reading the second book! Apparently, there are 4 currently out with a fifth being released in June.
This group gave "The Inheritance Games" by Jennifer Lynn Barnes 8 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.
To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
Book Club Meeting- March 29th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "The Paper Girl of Paris." We LOVED this book! It was fun to go back and forth from present day to 1940-1944. The love interests were well written, but the standout character was Adalyn. Many of us learned so much about an aspect of World War II we didn't know much about; the French Resistance. This book was touching and emotional. Many of us cried, or at least teared up. This is our favorite book of the year so far!
This group gave "The Paper Girl of Paris" by Jordyn Taylor 10 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
NOW: Sixteen-year-old Alice is spending the summer in Paris, but she isn’t there for pastries and walks along the Seine. When her grandmother passed away two months ago, she left Alice an apartment in France that no one knew existed. An apartment that has been locked for more than seventy years.
Alice is determined to find out why the apartment was abandoned and why her grandmother never once mentioned the family she left behind when she moved to America after World War II. With the help of Paul, a charming Parisian student, she sets out to uncover the truth. However, the more time she spends digging through the mysteries of the past, the more she realizes there are secrets in the present that her family is still refusing to talk about.
THEN: Sixteen-year-old Adalyn doesn’t recognize Paris anymore. Everywhere she looks, there are Nazis, and every day brings a new horror of life under the Occupation. When she meets Luc, the dashing and enigmatic leader of a resistance group, Adalyn feels she finally has a chance to fight back.
But keeping up the appearance of being a much-admired socialite while working to undermine the Nazis is more complicated than she could have imagined. As the war goes on, Adalyn finds herself having to make more and more compromises—to her safety, to her reputation, and to her relationships with the people she loves the most.
Book Club Meeting- February 28th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "And Then There Were None." We really liked this mystery! We all agreed that the beginning of the book was a bit complicated as it introduced so many characters in rapid succession. Once characters started to die one by one, things picked up very quickly! None of us were prepared for the surprise ending which told us "who dunnit". This was a quick and exciting read.
This group gave "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie 9 out of 10 stars!
Summary:
Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to an isolated mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die…
Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive?
This 1939 murder mystery thriller has been named the world's favorite Agatha Christie novel in a poll.
FUN FACT: Agatha Christie is the third most best selling author of all time. She is behind only William Shakespeare and the Holy Bible.
Book Club Meeting- January 24th, 2024
We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "The Night in Question." We LOVED it! It was fun getting to go back to the characters we enjoyed so much in "The Agathas". We struggled with some of the family trees and many new characters of this story, though. There were some similar tropes to the first novel as well, but overall, it was a fun ride! We're hopeful that they will write another one!
This group gave "The Night in Question" by Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson 9 out of 10 stars!
Summary: Last October, Alice Ogilvie's ex-best friend, Brooke Donovan, was killed—and if it weren't for Alice's unlikely alliance with her tutor, Iris Adams, and her library of the complete works of Agatha Christie, the wrong person would almost certainly be sitting in prison for the crime. The Castle Cove police aren't exactly great at solving crimes. In fact, they're notorious for not solving crimes.
Which is why, on the night of Castle Cove High's annual Sadie Hawkins dance, Alice takes the opportunity to explore Levy Castle—the site of one of Castle Cove's most infamous deaths. Mona Moody—the classic film star—died there almost a century ago, and Alice is pretty sure the police got that investigation wrong, too. But before she can even think about digging deeper, she walks right into the scene of a new crime. Rebecca Kennedy, on the ground in a pool of blood. And standing over Kennedy? Another one of Alice's ex-friends—Helen Park.
The Castle Cove Police Department thinks it's an open-and-shut case, but Alice and Iris are sure it can't be that simple. Park isn't a murderer—and the girls know all too well that in life, and in mysteries, things are rarely what they appear to be. To understand the present, sometimes you need to look to the past.
Castle Cove is full of secrets, and Alice and Iris are about to uncover one of its biggest—and most dangerous—secrets of all.
Book Club Meeting- December 18th, 2023
Author of "Fifty Feet Down" Sophie Tanen joined us for our second book club meeting! Sophie is from Rutland, Vermont but now lives in Chicago. Her grandmother is from West Rutland, and Sophie was inspired to write her novel based in our town! The book features similarities between some well known places like the quarries, the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, Mary's/Luke's Cafes, and West Rutland School! Sophie told us about her writing process and the huge undertaking of getting her first book published. Her second book, a fantasy this time, comes out in the summer of 2024. We had such a great time talking with her and can't wait to read her next book! Thank you for coming to speak with us Sophie!
The group gave "Fifty Feet Down" by Sophie Tanen a 7.0 out of 10 stars!
Summary: In the years since its foundation, the town of West Rutland has been known for one thing only: marble.
Marble houses, marble art, marble people. They were first and foremost a marble town, historically mining from deep, hundred feet quarries scattered in the woods.
Production was stopped long ago when thirteen workers were killed in an accident in the 1900s, a taint of death lingering over the heart and soul of the town. Today, it becomes known for something else, something darker.
Four disappearances in the past month, all high school boys yet to be found. That's all Alex knows when her boss ships her from New York City to Vermont to get the story. That, and the only family member she has left is waiting there, unaware of her existence.
But instead of answers, she only finds more questions in the form of Luna, who, despite working at the local sculpture garden, avoids the topic of marble quarries like the plague, mourning a ghost that no one in town will speak a word about. The last thing Alex wants is a distraction, but that's all Luna needs, and together they unravel each other's secrets one by one, searching for ways in which they might be intertwined. And through it all the quarries wait, where Alex finds Luna on more than one occasion, crumpled on her knees at the edge, staring down into fifty feet of haunted water.
Book Club Meeting- November 13th, 2023
We had our first official Book Club meeting! We enjoyed waffles and chatted about "The Agathas." We enjoyed it very much! The characters were complex and interesting, and we were genuinely surprised by the twist at the end. We felt like some characters were just tossed in and weren't necessary to the overall plot. We were shocked by who actually "did it" and overall had a great time reading it.
The group gave "The Agathas" by Kathleen Glasgow and Liz Lawson a 7.5 out of 10 stars!
Summary: Last summer, Alice Ogilvie’s basketball-star boyfriend Steve dumped her. Then she disappeared for five days. She's not talking, so where she went and what happened to her is the biggest mystery in Castle Cove. Or it was, at least. But now, another one of Steve’s girlfriends has vanished: Brooke Donovan, Alice’s ex–best friend. And it doesn’t look like Brooke will be coming back. . .
Enter Iris Adams, Alice’s tutor. Iris has her own reasons for wanting to disappear, though unlike Alice, she doesn’t have the money or the means. That could be changed by the hefty reward Brooke’s grandmother is offering to anyone who can share information about her granddaughter’s whereabouts. The police are convinced Steve is the culprit, but Alice isn’t so sure, and with Iris on her side, she just might be able to prove her theory.
In order to get the reward and prove Steve’s innocence, they need to figure out who killed Brooke Donovan. And luckily Alice has exactly what they need—the complete works of Agatha Christie. If there’s anyone that can teach the girls how to solve a mystery it’s the master herself. But the town of Castle Cove holds many secrets, and Alice and Iris have no idea how much danger they're about to walk into.
