MEET THE COACHES
Head Coach: Tonya Kimbrell (on the right is pictured with Mrs. Wheatley)
This is Ms. Kimbrell's 13th year to coach archery. She started coaching with Mrs. Wheatley 13 years ago as a co-coach for the Elementary team. At some point in her 13 years. Ms. Kimbrell has taught every level of archery from Elementary to High School. Ms. Kimbrell started coaching archery after she attended a tournament training as an official score keeper. The AGFC officer asked if she had ever shot a bow. When she said no he encouraged her to try it and the rest is history.
Ms. Kimbrell believes in the values and focus that archery provides for students. It teaches them that its not always about hitting a perfect bullseye or even making a perfect score. Sometimes an arrow does not fly to the place you want it, but there is always a chance to keep improving as long as your have drive, determination and GRIT. It also teaches students that its healthy to be competitive with your teammates, and yet it fosters a great kinship to wanting your teammates to do well because it will benefit you as a team member in the long run. Archery helps to round out an individual to not only build confidence in oneself, but to also build confidence and trust in your teammates.
Assistant Coach: Shauna Simon.
Mrs. Simon is a wife and a mother of two. She first got involved with archery when her youngest daughter joined the team. Witnessing the excitement on not only her daughter's face but on so many other student's faces really made her want to become involved. When the coaches needed help one day Shauna took that opportunity and ran with it. Now there is nothing that her girls enjoy together more than archery.
Mrs. Simon believes that archery gives students more than a bullseye-it builds focus, confidence, and patience while strengthening the body and sharpening the mind. It s a sport where everyone can succeed, no matter their background or ability, and it teaches teamwork, goal-setting, and discipline that carry into the classroom and beyond.
She feels that Archery is a skill for kids to prepare for their future.
The High School team is compromised of 9th-12th graders at Glen Rose High School. The Archery Program also hosts a $500 Scholarship to one Senior on the team that will be continuing their education in College. There is an application process you can find the application below.
