Decision Making
There are 4 ways to make decisions in group situations:
Vote by secret ballot (Example: an election or a lottery system).
Vote by show of hands.
Consensus - ALL members of the group must agree or disagree.
Representation - one person or a small number o people speak for a larger number of people on their behalf.

Democracy and its Foundation
Equity vs. Equality
Remember that the root word of equality is equal. This means everyone/everything is the same, whereas equity is fairness based on needs.
Democracy
The word democracy literally means “rule by the people.” It is derived from a Greek phrase coined from the words demos(“people”) and kratos (“rule”).
The four pillars of democracy are easily remembered using the acronym F.R.E.J

Levels of Government in Canada
Local/Municipal Government
This is the section of government that is responsible for our urban and rural localities.
Mayor/Reeve is the elected head representative of each locality. The Reeve for Clearwater County is Pat Alexander.
The section of government that is responsible for our provinces.
Premier is the elected head of each province. Alberta's premier is Rachel Notley (N.D.P.)
Federal Government
The section of government that is responsible for our country.
The Prime Minister is the elected head representative. Currently, Justin Trudeau (Liberal) is our Prime Minister.
