Functional Skills
May 18th to May 20th
This week we have three days of school left. I just want you to practice all of the skills we have been working on during school dismissal. All of our money skills and your personal information.
May 11th to May 15th
This week we are going to work on money again. We are going to work on bills (paper money), identifying and naming amounts they are worth and sorting them into like kinds. If you don't have any actual bills around your house, look on the internet for some you can print.
May 4th to May 8th
This week we are focusing on learning our birthday and age. This is important information for many reasons, but you definitely need this when getting a job. There are lots of ways to practice, like saying it out loud or copying someone else saying it, writing or tracing it, or finding it among all the birth dates in your household when they are written down. Take some time this week to learn your birth date!
April 27th to May 1st
This week we are going to focus on needs and wants as part of our money skills. Sometimes we don't have enough money to buy everything we need and want and we need to learn to prioritize our needs over our wants. So, this week we are going to learn what our needs are and how to decide if it is really a need or just a want.
This is the Lesson Plan for Needs and Wants.
This is the needs and wants activity sheet that I mention in the video.
April 20th to April 24th
Personal Information-This week we are working on our address. The first thing to do is have someone either dot or write with highlighter your street address, city, state, and zip code so that you can practice tracing it. You can also work on identifying it when other addresses are present and pick out your address. You can also go outside and find your mailbox and see if your address is on it. This is where your mail will come that is sent to that address. You could also cut it out and put it back together like a puzzle. This can be done with each individual letter and number or in chunks.
This is the lesson plan for working on learning our address for personal information.
April 13th to April 17th
Money Skills: Coin Identification
Let's work on the names of the coins and identifying the coins that are named. This is important so that when you go shopping or want to buy something from the vending machine and someone tells you, you need one more quarter or two more pennies, then you are able to find the right coins that you need. This week, practice saying the coin names, match the coins, and if you have a jar of change at your house, you could sort the coins by type.
This is the Coin Identification lesson plan that can be used at home to go with the video.
April 6th to April 10th
Personal Information: Your phone number
Knowing your phone number is important for many reasons. The most important is for safety. If you ever needed to call someone in an emergency, you need to know the phone number. Another reason is for job applications. Also, we like to stay in touch with our friends and family and sharing our phone number with those we know well helps us stay in touch.
This is the lesson plan for parents to use to teach phone number at home that goes with the video.
March 30th to April 3rd
Money: Dollar more method
The dollar more method is pretty easy concept. The idea is to look at a price and pay one dollar more than the dollar amount asked for. For example if I went out to lunch and my total as $5.75 I would pay $6, which is one dollar more than $5. During this next week practice this a home. This weeks video will give you some ideas of what you can do to practice this skill.
Here is a quick guide to the dollar more method. Feel free to print it of and use it to help you better understand this method.
March 24th to March 27th
Personal information
The number one skill we are working on in this area is name identification and writing your name. Here are some ways to help your child.
Have them practice writing their first name. There are many levels for this.
a. They can trace, you can just simply dot the letters of their name and they can trace over it with a pencil or pen. You can also use a highlighter to write their name and they can trace over the highlighter. Some students may need physical assistance also.
b. They can write it independently from a model (you write it and they copy it).
c. They can write it independently without a model.
If they can already do this, you can extend it by adding their last name, phone number, address, age, birth date, etc.
You could also write their name on smaller pieces of paper and hide them around the house and have them find them. You could add different names to make this more difficult.
