English Language Arts
Length: Year Available for: 9th grade
Ninth grade English focuses on reading, writing, discussion, and presentation skills. Throughout the year, students will read a variety of texts exploring themes of identity, opposition, and culture. In response to these texts, students will discuss and compose narrative, argumentative, research, and informational essays. Students will have personal books assigned to them throughout the year as well as in-class texts.

A rigorous study of literature and writing. Honors English explores themes of rebellion, identity, opposition, and social class. Personal reading assignments are given throughout the year. Ninth grade English focuses on reading, writing, discussion, and presentation skills. In response to these texts, students will discuss and compose narrative, argumentative, research, and informational essays. Honors English is a preparatory course for students interested in AP English.

This course teaches you to break down arguments and rhetorical strategies in mostly non-fiction works. Non-fiction can include speeches, essays, newspaper articles, and more. Hence, throughout the semester you will be developing writing and analysis skills that will extend far beyond the English classroom.

Listening, perception, verbal clarity, nonverbal, diversity, conflict management and interviewing in workplace and interpersonal settings. This class will give you 3 hours of college credit and this is a required class in every school around the country. Get it done in high school.

Preparing and delivering speeches, which include informative and persuasive presentations, for civic and professional occasions. Basic theory and skills practice, including audience analysis, anxiety management, critical listening, supporting claims with evidence, persuasion, motivation, and delivery.

A beginning course in expository and academic writing. Development of critical reading, writing, and thinking, and rhetorical strategies form the curricular base for this course. This is a college level course with advanced level expectations. College credit is available for those who pass the course at a prescribed level of competency.

Creative Writing is an introduction to different types of writing: nonfiction, fiction, and poetry while learning essential writing craft skills such as imagery, characterization, dialogue, structure, and voice. The goal is to experiment with writing in order to figure out what interests you.

Creative Writing 2 or Advanced Creative Writing is a semester-long course that builds on the skills practiced in Creative Writing 1. Studying mentor texts and examining a broad range of writing is a critical component in developing students’ creative expression skills. In addition the course focuses on skills necessary for writing fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama and student works culminate in a writing portfolio.

General Fiction can count for fourth year English credit. This course focuses on improving reading and writing skills. Using vocabulary, comprehension and interpretation, students will discuss general works of fiction including short story, drama, novel and film. Both writing to learn and process writing will enhance learning and thinking. This course follows the English 12 standards.

Journalism 1 is the introductory course. Various aspects of journalism will be explored including writing, editing, civics, and history. Classes will include discussions, workshops, group and individual meetings, writing, photography, revising, and online publishing.
Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades
Prerequisite: Journalism 1
This workshop class produces the school newspaper. Good Grades, good writing skills, and dependability are necessary. Attendance is mandatory. Computer skills and photography experience are helpful. Students will focus on leading the news team, designing the layout of the newspaper, continuation of photojournalism, continuation of writing skills, and the completion of a portfolio. Editors will plan and participate in activities, help direct first year students, and produce the final layout and design of the newspaper.
