AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE
American Sign Language 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
An instructional program that prepares individuals to interpret oral speech for the hearing impaired. Includes instruction in American Sign Language,finger spelling, orientation to Deaf culture and interpreting from signing to voice as well as from voice to signing. This class is mainly voice off and very interactive.
American Sign Language 2
Year - 10-12 Grades
Prerequisite: American Sign Language 1. An instructional program that prepares individuals to interpret oral speech for the hearing impaired. American Sign Language 3
Year - 11-12 Grades
Prerequisite: American Sign Language 2. Includes instruction in American Sign Language, finger spelling, and orientation to Deaf culture and interpreting from signing to voice as well as from voice to signing. Students will learn abstract concepts of the language, will be able to narrate past events and discuss solutions to problems. This is an advanced class for students desirous of a possible career in ASL. This class is entirely voice off and interactive.
CHINESE
Chinese 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
This is a beginning course in Chinese. Listening and speaking skills will be emphasized but students will also be introduced to written Chinese characters. Conversation topics include: self-introduction, family, occupations, color, body parts. Chinese culture will be studied throughout the course.
Chinese 2
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Chinese 1. This second-year course is a continuation of the study of Chinese grammar, conversation and culture. Conversation topics include: school subjects, hobbies, house, weather, food, clothing, sports and health. More written Chinese characters will be introduced.
Chinese 3
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Chinese 2. Students will continue to develop skills in spoken and written Chinese. Conversation topics include; relatives, school, facilities, markets, neighborhood, and sickness. Everyday conversation skills will be emphasized. Narratives and dialogues are used to teach structure and vocabulary. Modern culture as well as ancient history topics are included.
Chinese 4
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Chinese 3. Students will continue to develop skills in spoken and written Chinese. Essay writing will be required. Narratives and dialogues are used to teach structure and vocabulary. Modern culture as well as ancient history topics are included.
FRENCH
French 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
The four basic language skills are listening, speaking, reading and writing. In level 1 teachers stress vocabulary, grammar and structure. Students practice the skills by means of dialogues, structure drills and exercises. Students also study culture and geography. Areas of study include numbers, colors, likes/dislikes, family, school, shopping and restaurants.
French 2
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: French 1 or equivalent. This course continues the development of speaking and listening skills and emphasizes reading. Narratives and dialogues are used to teach structure and vocabulary. Through the reading selections, pupils learn about French culture and geography. Areas of study include clothing, food, daily routine, introductory past tense, health, and tourism.
French 3
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: French 2 or equivalent. This course is similar to French 2 but it is on a more advanced level. Students develop language skills through reading longer pieces and speaking as well as through presentations. Areas of study include relationships, past tense, art, the environment, fairy tales, future tense, careers and travel.
French 4
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite French 3. French 4 focuses on improving language skills through daily speaking practice. Students will continue learning verb tenses and vocabulary through activities such as films, conversations, and presentations. Some areas of study include healthy lifestyles, technology, global citizenship, holidays, and civic responsibility. Students will also learn about French history and culture.
French 5
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite French 4. French 5 emphasizes refining a student’s already acquired language skills. Finer points of grammar are integrated into many speaking and writing activities with a view of preparing to take AP French the following year. This class has a rotating curriculum from year to year which is adapted to the needs and priorities of each class. Topics can include novels, French culture, French history, and AP preparation. Essays and presentations are emphasized to prepare for the French AP.
AP French Language and Culture
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: French 5. The AP French Language and Culture course emphasizes communication by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary, communication, and cultural awareness. Essay writing and presentational skills are emphasized. Students taking this course will have the opportunity to take the French Language and Culture AP exam at the end of the school year.
ITALIAN
Italian 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
Italian 1 focuses on the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, with an emphasis on speaking proficiency. The course stresses vocabulary, grammar and structure. Students practice these skills through dialogues, structure drills and written exercises. Students also study the culture and geography of Italy. Workbook required.
Italian 2
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Italian 1. Italian 2 builds on the foundational skills learned in Italian 1, including: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on conversational Italian. Students practice skills in conversational groups through dialogues, phrase generation activities, reading, and writing. Through reading selections and class discussion, students learn about the many aspects of Italian culture.
Italian 3

JAPANESE
Japanese 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
This is a beginning course of the Japanese language. Listening and speaking skills will be emphasized, but students will learn and use the writing systems of hiragana, katakana and some kanji. Japan’s geography, history and culture will be studied throughout the course.
Japanese 2
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Japanese 1. This second-year course includes such topics as the family, animals, shopping, recreation, business and geography.Students learn more kanji. The class is designed for students who have mastered hiragana and katakana.
Japanese 3
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Japanese 2. This course is a continuation of the study of Japanese grammar, vocabulary and culture. Speaking and listening skills will be stressed, but students will do more reading and writing as well as work more with kanji than in previous years.
Japanese 4 / AP
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Japanese 3.
This course is a continuation of the study of Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and culture. Speaking and listening skills will be stressed, but students will do more reading and writing as well as work more with kanji than in previous years. Studying for the AP test is also an option for particularly ambitious students.
KOREAN
Korean 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
This is a beginning course of the Korean language. Listening and speaking skills will be emphasized, but students will also learn to use hangeul, the Korean writing system, and a few hanja (Chinese characters). Korea’s geography, history and culture will be studied throughout the course, with an emphasis on understanding current cultural trends, food, daily life, and family relationships.
Korean 2

Prerequisite: Korean 1.

SPANISH
Spanish 1
Year - 9-12 Grades
Spanish 1 emphasizes the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on oral language. Students practice these skills by means of dialogues, reading selections, and written exercises. Grammar and structure are taught to meet communication goals. Students also study Spanish culture.
Spanish 2
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or equivalent. Second-year Spanish builds on the foundation of skills learned in Spanish 1 including listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing with emphasis on conversational Spanish. Students practice skills in conversational groups through dialogues, structure drills and reading and writing. Through reading selections and class discussion, students learn more about the many aspects of Spanish culture and the countries that speak Spanish.
Spanish 3
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Spanish 2 or equivalent. The goal of Spanish 3 is to help students continue to build Spanish proficiency and to help develop the capacity to use the Spanish language in a meaningful and functional way by engaging in conversations and other communicative tasks that require an advanced use of the language. The course emphasizes communication skills, foundations of language learning, and understanding of cultures in the Spanish- speaking world.
Spanish 4
Year - 9-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Spanish 3 or equivalent. Emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication in real life tasks, it focuses on developing your abilities in the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational) and strengthening your cultural competencies through theme- based instruction based on a variety of authentic resources, such as: newspapers, magazines, podcasts, blogs, advertisements, television programs, films, music, video clips, and literature. Grammar and vocabulary are developed through contextualized study. This class is to prepare students to take AP Spanish Language and Culture the following year.
Spanish DLI 5 (Dual Language Immersion)
Grade 9
DLI 5 is AP Spanish designed for 9th grade DLI students in the DLI program. Students will achieve a high level of ability in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By engaging in exciting, real-life learning materials, students will develop an in-depth cultural and linguistic understanding of the Spanish language. DLI 5 is an awesome way to prepare yourself for a career in the 21st Century global economy and continue onto Bridge (CE 3000 level University Spanish courses in Olympus) to graduate HS. with just 2-3 classes shy of a minor in Spanish. College credit is received upon passing the AP exam.
AP Spanish Language and Culture

Prerequisite: Spanish 4 or equivalent. In AP Spanish, students will achieve a high level of ability in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Spanish Bridge Course CE SPAN 3116: Pop Culture: Film, Media and Entertainment
Year - 10-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Pass AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. This is a 3000 level University of Utah course (3 U of U credits). This course considers the role that current film, media, and entertainment play in the Spanish-speaking world. Students in this course will be exposed to the historical and cultural perspectives presented through these media.
