Prerequisite: Completion of Secondary Math 2 Honors. This is a math-based physics course for students who need an introductory physics background. The course presents concepts in motion, force, momentum, energy, heat, light and sound, gravitation, electricity, and magnetism. Concepts will be covered in both 1 and 2 dimensions. This course is equivalent to a freshman college physics class. Fee: $15
AP Physics C (Mechanics) – 602150
Available for: 11-12 Grades
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Calculus. AP Physics C: Mechanics is equivalent to a one-semester, calculus based, college-level physics course, especially appropriate for students planning to specialize or major in physical science, engineering, math, or another technology-based field. The course explores topics such as kinematics; Newton’s laws of motion; work, energy, and power; systems of particles and linear momentum; circular motion and rotation; and oscillations and gravitation. Introductory differential and integral calculus is used throughout the course. Fees may apply.
AP Environmental Science- 602570
Available for: 10-12 Grades
Recommended courses to take before this class (not pre-requisite): Biology and/or Chemistry
This Advanced Placement course is designed to be the equivalent of a college course in environmental science. It fills the Earth Science requirement for graduation. If you have not taken a full year high school science class, it is not recommended that you take this class. This class requires both strong reading and writing skills. You need to have excellent time management and study habits to be successful in this course. You will have homework every night that will take you 30 minutes to an hour to complete. The course goal is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts and methodologies to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify environmental problems and the relative risk associated with them and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.
Astronomy – 603001
This one-semester science elective class will introduce you to the wonders of the universe! We will learn about the history of Astronomy and space exploration, survey the Sun and the planets of our Solar System, and discuss the stars and other fascinating (and sometimes dangerous!) objects out in space. We will talk about how events in the Universe have influenced and do influence life on our planet (no, not horoscopes), and discuss how discoveries involving the other planets can help us to build a better world here on Earth.
Elementary Astronomy – CE (PHYS 1040)
Available for: 12th Grade
Prerequisite: Successful completion of either a physics or chemistry course.
This is an Astronomy course offered through Salt Lake Community College (PHYS 1040: Elementary Astronomy). In this course students will learn about the process of science and the influence of light, motion, and gravity. We will study the planets of the Solar System, the nature and lives of the stars, and the larger structure of the Universe—galaxies and beyond. We will also discuss the fascinating discoveries astronomers are making today. Students will gain a greater appreciation of the night sky, and they will understand how we know as much about the Universe as we do. Fees may apply.
Wildlife Biology - 602851
Available for: 11-12 grades
Wildlife biology is an ecology based curriculum that covers topics in population, community, and ecosystem ecology. Students utilize the Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts as they learn identification skills of different taxa and consider the importance of wildlife management and conservation as a result of human impact. Basic descriptive statistics are used to learn the experimental process and hypothesis testing as they relate to wildlife and wildlands.
Zoology - 602901
Available for: 11-12 grades
Students in Zoology utilize the Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts as they investigate the major structures, functions, and processes animals use to survive in their respective environments. An emphasis on phylogenetics helps students learn to classify animals into major animal taxa, determine their evolutionary relationships, and identify adaptations. Concepts of comparative anatomy are introduced to emphasize shared derived traits of organisms in the kingdom Animalia.
