Applying for College

Steps to follow if you plan to attend college:

  1. Complete Application - The Texas Common Application is an efficient way to apply for college because it can be used for many in colleges in Texas. Be sure that you know the deadline date for your particular college. For other colleges who do not use the common application, go directly to the college website to inquire about the application process. https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/gen/c_start.WBX

  1. Transcript - You will need to fill out a request for transcript from the high school from which you graduated and transcripts from any college from which you earned dual credits. Request that they be sent to the college to which you are applying.

  1. FAFSA - Fill out your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online. You can also download an App that will help you complete the application. If you have special circumstances and need assistance, contact the financial aid office at the college or consult Mrs. Walters. https://studentaid.gov/

  1. Admission Testing - Take all tests needed for your college. (ACT, SAT, TSI, etc.) Be sure to check the deadlines for each college.

  1. Apply for Scholarships - Check GHS Counseling web page in late February/early March for local scholarships. Also check your college website for scholarships. There are thousands of resources available online.

  1. Letters of Recommendation - Please allow your teachers a lead time when asking them to write a letter for you. Take time to sit down and discuss your plans with them and give them some personal information. Let them know you appreciate them with a personal thank you note!

  1. Essay for College Applications - An application essay is your way of introducing yourself as an unique person to the college you plan to attend. Your ELA teacher will be invaluable here. At STARS, this will be a required assignment of all students.

  1. Keep a File - Keeping copies of all forms (FAFSA, applications, essays, etc.) that you submit will save headaches and time later. Many applications require the same forms. So hang on to all of it.
