Assalamu ‘alaikum! From all of us on the 6th Grade Team, we hope that you enjoyed your summer break! We are excited to welcome you to the Sixth Grade, and we look forward to seeing you on the first day of school (Monday, August 11th).
We are confident that this year will provide learning experiences that will help your children become stronger Muslims, Insha Allah. Because you are an integral part of your child's education, we aim to keep you updated and informed about their learning through biweekly updates and various announcements as needed through this Google Site. Please also see the 'Resources' links below that contain helpful information.
The 6th Grade Team wants each student to leave our classrooms with confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning! As your child prepares to begin this school year, please refer to the administrative emails that contain sixth-grade book lists and School general updates.

Mona Abdelaziz
Assalamu Alaikum!
My name is Mona Abdelaziz, and I am excited to be your students' ELA teacher this year! This is my 25th year of teaching, and my 4th year at GIS. I have a BA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and an MA in English and Comparative Literature from the American University in Cairo as well as a California Single Subject Credential. I love teaching English and interacting with students, and I am looking forward to a fun, fruitful year insha'Allah!

My name is Dana Helweh and I am the Homeroom Teacher for 6B. I will be your child's Math teacher for 6A and 6B. This is my 14th year at Granada as a full-time teacher. I teach 5th, 6th, and 8th grades.
I have a BA Degree in Mathematics, a Minor in Philosophy, MA in Educational Leadership, and 2 single subject Credentials in Arabic & Math. I am so happy to meet all of my students and I want them to know that each and every one of them is a uniquely special individual. I look forward to meeting you all, Insha Allah!

Science Teacher
Assalamu Alaykum!
I am Zeba Haq. I have a BS in Physiology from KU (University of Karachi), Pakistan, and ECE units from De Anza College. I am also a graduate of Pearls of Quran Detailed Tafsir Course from Al Huda Institute, and serve the community with Quran Tafsir classes. Teaching is my passion, and I have been dedicated to this profession for over 30 years. This is my 22nd year at GIS and my 33rd year of teaching overall. This year, I will be teaching 5th and 6th-grade Science. In addition to teaching, I have also served as a mentor, guiding teachers and students in their academic and personal development.
This year, I am committed to building strong relationships with my students by understanding and supporting their intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional well-being. My goal is to empower them with the knowledge and confidence needed to thrive and succeed.

Assalamu Alaikum,
I am privileged to teach the Quran and Tajweed. I have been teaching these subjects for the past six years at Granada Islamic School for grades 5 through 8. I have a B.A in Biology. I have been studying the Quran for the past 21 years, and by the blessing of Allah SWT, I have been able to learn and receive an Ijazah for the 10 Qira'at of the Quran. I am excited to share my knowledge with my students. I am from Algeria and have 3 children. I enjoy going on hikes and have a deep love for nature.
I look forward to getting to know all my students and having a successful year with them.
My name is Maqboleh Alam and I have been teaching at Granada for 17 years.
I am currently the Qur'an Leader and Arabic teacher for the 3rd Heritage group, 5th and 6th non-heritage Combo Quranic Arabic , 7th Heritage, HS Arabic 3, and the Quran teacher for 11th and 12th grade. I received my medical technology degree in Palestine and intensive training and certification in teaching Arabic as a second language at Occidental College through Startalk. I have Completed Ejaza (certification) in Hafs and Qaloon recitation - Ijazah in Matn Aljazareyya and Tuhfat alatfal (tajweed rules).
I am very excited to share my knowledge with our 6th-grade students.

My name is Samia Soubra and I'll be teaching Arabic for the heritage level. This is my 23rd year at Granada Islamic School. I was born in Georgia & raised in Lebanon. I'll teach Middle & High School Arabic. Also, I'll be the head of the Arabic department. I hold a bachelor's degree in English Language & Literature, multiple and single subject credentials & Masters in Cross-cultural Teaching. I have 3 children: Ibrahim, Maryam, & Sarah. I enjoy traveling, swimming, skiing, hiking, reading children’s magazines & exploring new places.

My name is Mai Elsaman, I will be your child's art teacher and Arabic for the non-heritage class ISA.
My BA is in fine arts from Egypt, I worked for Cairo University for one year. I was A member of ART CLUB OF Santa Clara and won the Artist of the year 2012. I have been teaching Arabic for the past seven years. I worked with my kids in schools as a volunteer. I love cooking, workout, and swimming.
I am thrilled to be part of your child's educational journey and look forward to seeing the wonderful art they will create this year.

I will be teaching Computer Science to grades 5 through high school. I hold a BS in software engineering. I have a passion for technology and education. I look forward to educating the next generation of young Muslims and preparing them for success in the future.
I consider myself to be a creative and resourceful individual. I intend to bring these qualities to the classroom to create a safe educational environment where students can unleash their own creativity.
