2026 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Dates: June 6 - August 17
As a Muslim community we love and take pride in our children. We consider them to be our most important asset and investment. Helping our children to develop a love of reading has many scientifically documented benefits. Reading not only builds vocabulary, writing and communication skills, but readers are better able to mitigate stress, and develop better emotional intelligence.
Research tells us that readers who select their own reading materials are more likely to develop a love for reading, which can lead to a lifelong habit of reading. Reading 20 minutes a day--or about 5 novel-length books--over the summer can help students avoid summer learning loss and develop their reading stamina.
Summer reading should be FUN. Let kids choose what they want to read. Take lots of trips to the library or your local bookstore.
See the Recommended reading list on the GIS Library Website. Scroll to the bottom to access Pre-K to 12th–grade book lists. Students should read books at their interest and reading level.
To participate in the Summer Reading Program, your child must do the following:
Print the Summer Reading Log
Record the minutes read each day, fill out the title and have a parent initial or sign the reading log.
Read 1000 minutes by the end of the summer (about 20 minutes a day).
Once you complete the goal, turn in the completed log to the GIS Library by Mon., Aug. 17th, 2026 to earn a prize!
No late entries will be accepted.
Prizes:
1. If a student reads 1000 minutes by the end of the summer, he or she will receive a prize (to be announced later) & a completion certificate.
2. One Book Check-out Pass will be awarded to 1st – 12th graders who read 1000 minutes by August 17, 2026. This Book Pass allows students to double the amount of books he or she would normally be allowed to check out according to his or her grade level. (Example 2nd graders will be able to check out six books instead of three.)
Keep reading Granadians!
