From Worker to CEO
Introduction
The Dodge brothers started one of the most successful car brands ever and their legacy lives on to this day. They went through many challenges throughout their career, many highs and lows but in the end they managed to make it work out. They have impacted not only the United States but the entire world as their vehicles are still driven and have inspired other car brands. Despite having a poor start they still worked around every challenge they faced which eventually led to their success in the automobile industry. Their vehicles are still to this day some of the safest fastest dependable and overall best cars on the market today. Despite the brother's death the brand still lived on and became even more successful than ever. In conclusion, the Dodge brand was only able to be made because of 2 hardworking brothers and they worked so hard that it's one of the most successful brands to this day.
Early Life
John and Horace Dodge both had interesting childhoods. John and Horace were both born in Niles, Michigan John was born in 1864, and Horace was born in 1868. “It all began in the small town of Niles, Michigan” (History of the Dodge Brand). The Dodge brother's mother was Maria Duval Casto and their father was Daniel Rugg Dodge. Maria was born in 1823 and died in 1906. Daniel was born in 1819 and died in 1897. The Dodge brothers also had: a sister, Della Lone; a half-brother; Charles Frontier Dodge; and a half-sister, Laura Belle. John went to a normal high school in Niles, Michigan, but his brother Horace took a different path and had his education in his dad's shop. “They received mechanical training from working in their father’s machine shop” (Dodge Brothers). The Dodge brothers gained a good reputation at the beginning of their career for their experience. “They already had a reputation for quality and excellence in the automotive industry” (The History Of Dodge). The Evans & Dodge Bicycle Company founded by John Dodge and Horace Dodge made bicycles before making Ford engines and starting their car brand in 1914. Before starting the Dodge Brand the Dodge brothers spent a while designing their first car and finding ways to manufacture their cars since they were no longer working with Ford. Because of the Dodge brothers' experience with cars, they were easily able to introduce their first car just a short while after parting ways with Ford.
Beginning of Career
The Dodge brothers began producing engines in 1902 after a while of making bikes. “In 1902, the brothers pivoted to supplying engines, transmissions and axles to major customers like Oldsmobile and Northern” (History of the Dodge Brand). In their time making engines, they became one of the largest manufacturers of car engines in the state of Detroit Michigan. A year later, in 1903, they started a partnership with Ford and produced their parts. “partnership emerged with automobile industry newcomer Ford Motor Company” (History of the Dodge Brand). Eleven years later, in 1914, the two brothers parted ways with Ford and introduced their own car brand. “On July 17, 1914, the Dodge brothers decided to branch off from Ford and sell their own automobiles” (The History Of Dodge). Very shortly after starting The Dodge Brand the Brothers sold lots of vehicles and became one of the largest manufacturers of cars in the United States. “Dodge quickly made its foundation on dependability” (The History Of Dodge). The brothers were successful and sold hundreds of thousands of cars in a few years. “The brand reached their 400,000th vehicle produced in 1919” (The History Of Dodge). At this time the Dodge Brothers experienced their first ever peak and, the Dodge brand was producing some of the best cars it had ever made at the time and was making some of the best money these factors led to Dodge experiencing one of its best years in the 1920s.
Significant accomplishments
The Dodge Brothers had many advancements in the automobile and bicycle industries. One of the first major contributions by the Dodge Brothers was making one of the first dirt-resistant bikes in 1896 and receiving a patent for it. After receiving their patent they switched to cars because of their dependability and reputation of working with Ford, they quickly became one of the most respected car brands within the first few years of being in business. “The brothers made 121,000 Dodge cars and made sales of 24 million dollars” (History of the Dodge Brand). A year later in 1915, the Dodge brand won an award for their dependability, further establishing their position in the automobile industry. The Dodge Brothers also helped the United States military fight in the First World War by producing bikes that helped defend against enemy attacks. The military vehicles were first produced in 1919 and they produced 400,000 units. “Over five years, the brothers produced commercial, civilian, and military trucks” (History of the Dodge Brand). “With a 1,155mm (about 3.79 ft) gun recoil system for the armies during the war” (History of the Dodge Brand). In the 1920s, the Dodge brand produced their one-millionth car ever along with opening their first factory in Canada which was one of the first American car company factories in Canada. “During the 1920s, the Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company opened its first Canadian factory” “in a calendar year, produced its 1 millionth car” (History of the Dodge Brand). In 1921, The Dodge brand became the second-largest automobile company in the United States. “By 1921 Dodge was the second best-selling brand in America” “A few years later they joined Chrysler” “On July 30, 1928, Dodge officially became part of the Chrysler Corporation” (Dodge Brand History).
Impact on the world
The United States was impacted by the Dodge brothers in many ways from advancements in their cars to other brands as well. In 1933, the Dodge brand introduced the iconic Ram sub-brand which is now one of the most driven car brands in the United States. “In 1933, Dodge adopted the iconic RAM symbol” (The History Of Dodge). Also in the 1930s, the Dodge Brand was becoming more successful and began spreading to other continents and countries which helped the car culture of countries outside of the United States. “Dodge was becoming Internationally successful” (The History Of Dodge). In 1954, the Dodge brand got into the racing business when they introduced their first race car. “In 1954, with the V8 engine” (The History Of Dodge). In the modern day, the Dodge Brand is one of the most influential brands in things like Formula 1 and other racing brands. In 1966, the Dodge Brand introduced one of the most successful vehicles of all time the Dodge Charger, The Charger was one of the most sold Dodge cars, It influenced many other models of The Dodge brand and some of those models are still driven today.
Death and legacy
The Dodge Brand legacy lives on to this day because of the quality of the cars and the story of its two founders John and Horace Dodge. The United States and other countries outside of the United States have been impacted a lot by the Dodge Brothers. Because of the Dodge brand the Dodge cars are driven a lot. The Dodge cars have also impacted the culture, Dodge is one of the most influential brands which is why it's shown in lots of media from races to ads as well as showing up in places like car meets. Dodge has also influenced the United States by being the inspiration for lots of other brands. The Dodge brand has influenced the United States economy by influencing the automobile industry and other similar industries like the retail industry. The Dodge brand has also influenced the United States' history in many things like wars, entertainment, and politics. For example, the Dodge brand helped the United States during World War 1 fight against the enemies by supplying vehicles to support the United States's military power, this also had lots to do with politics because the United States government officials were the ones who chose Dodge to buy vehicles from. The Dodge brand has also streamed many ads showcasing things like their cars and making fun of the competition in the automobile industry which influenced the amount of people buying from the Dodge brand's competitors. The Dodge brothers possessed commitment and discipline because no matter what even if they weren't making money they still continued the brand which led to their success. The Dodge brothers are people to look up to because they were hard workers and they show that no dream is impossible to complete. In conclusion, the Dodge brand legacy lives on to this day as it is one of the best brands and has a great story.
