Herman W. Lay
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 6th of 1909
His parents were Jesse N. and Bertha Erman Parr Lay
When he was you he moved to Greenville, South Carolina
Living on a farm while his dad sold machinery which was a great example for Mr. Lay
Even as a young kid his hard work was divine
With the job that he had selling peanuts, he made good pay
He went to college on a sports scholarship
But decided to drop out to pursue his passion for sales
He was jobless during the great depression so he had to catch a grip
200 letters were sent out to different employers full of details
Only one replied, a potato chip company
He turned down the job because he saw no future in potato chips like a dumb bunny
Realizing he needed the job he asked for the offer once again just because he needed money
After hard work and dedication, he branched off on his own just to create the biggest potato chip company
He went on to receive and achieve so much more
Winning the Golden Plate award was as sweet as eating honey
His company being the first to go national was a total score
In 2019 revenues hit $67 billion dollars
He was the first alumnus of Furman University he’s a real inspiration to scholars
Busy, hard-working, and determined are all words that describe Mr. Lay
He impacted many people's mindsets just by being the way he is with these traits
Retirement meant nothing to him he was still as hard-working as ever
A lot of different chip brands tried to copy the flavor but no one can beat that company
“I could always taste the difference” said some guy named Trevor
When the question was what's the best salty chip there was no debate
Lays was the only right answer to this survey
Mr. Lay was a great man all in all
He really inspired a lot of people and showed them all great lessons
