A FORDafied life

Introduction

The most important person in the car industry was Henry Ford. For all people who are in love with cars, they know who he is, but for all other people, Henry Ford was a man who invented the assembly line and the Model T. The Model T was a huge piece in the history of cars. It was the first car to roll off the assembly line and was the first car to be affordable. Henry Ford was a genius in his time and someone who acted on that. If Henry Ford never created the Ford company, our world would have looked so different. Cars would be for the rich only, and we would have fewer roads and less transportation.  People would have to walk to work or school and life would probably look different.

Early life

Henry Ford had an interesting childhood. Henry's father was born in Ireland and moved to America and worked on the farm later in his life. Henry Ford was born in Springwells, Michigan, on July 30th, 1863, in Wayne County. Henry had two sisters and four brothers and of all, he was the eldest.  Because Henry Ford was in a family of seven children, he most likely got less attention than the average American child (Henry Ford, Automotive Hall of Fame). Henry’s mother was Mary Ford (née Ligot). Young Henry "showed an early interest in mechanics'' in his life (Henry Ford Biography). One story of Henry was when he was 12, his dad gave him a pocket watch which he promptly took apart and then put back together. This act of brilliance impressed the neighbors so they gave Henry their timepieces to fix (Henry Ford Biography). When Henry was a little older, he was spending all his free time in a self-equipped mechanic shop where at 15, Henry built his very first steam engine (Henry Ford, Automotive Hall of Fame). When Henry was 16, he was done with farm work so he set off into the world. This was the start of the great and adverse career of Henry Ford (Henry Ford, Biography.com).

Beginning of Career

After Henry left home he apprenticed under James F. Flower as a mechanic (Henry Ford, Biography.com). After spending years working on steam engines, Henry could fix and operate a steam engine very easily (Henry Ford Biography, Ford Corporate). After he decided to leave James F. Flower, who had become an important mentor to Henry Ford he worked in Detroit where his natural talents easily landed him a job as chief engineer in the Edison company  .  (Henry Ford, Automotive Hall of Fame). While Henry worked at Edison Illuminating, he was also working on his automobile and created his first gasoline-powered engine on his kitchen table. It was a one-cylindrical gasoline engine and with that, the Ford engine was born. Henry made this motor then he combined bicycle wheels and a frame to the motor this was named the Ford quadricycle. He pitched the automobile to Tomas Edison who told him to refine it, so the man refined it by giving it a better engine. After Henry reinvented the quadricycle, then he was awarded a patent, and six years later, Henry retired from the Edison Illuminating Company and founded the Detroit Automobile Company (Henry Ford, Biography.com). Henry Ford had many ups and downs such as when his first business went into bankruptcy about 18 months after it was created.  After the quadricycle, Ford made several racing cars (Henry Ford, Automotive Hall of Fame).

Significant accomplishments

Henry was a high-achieving family man who made a name for himself. While working for the Edison company, Henry Ford married Clara Ford (née Bryant).  Together they had one child, Edsel, who was born in.  Henry Ford Accomplished a lot; he revolutionized the world with his invention of the assembly line and his Model T. Henry made everything cheaper and easier for employees to make (Henry Ford Biography). It was also perfect for the consumers because the Model T was cheap, easy to repair, and maneuverable. Three years after Ford Motor Company was founded it was named America’s top car manufacturer. Next, Ford established the Highland Park plant in 1910. After his accomplishments, he became so famous that people wanted tours of his factory starting in 1924 now, Ford was a fair man so he adopted the 40-hour work week (8 hours a day) in 1926. Then a few years later Chevrolet took the #1 spot in America. Chevrolet was very successful and held its title for one and a half years then Ford took it back by producing the Model A (Ford Rough Timeline). Henry, about this time, also broke the world record for the fastest mile by going a mile in under 30 seconds (Henry Ford, Automotive).  In 1929, Ford hired over 100,000 people for the Ford Motor Company. Then Ford released a new engine, the V-8 engine a few years later, but ten years later, disaster struck, and World War II  stopped all production for the war. To solve this problem, the Ford company sold to the military and solidified Detroit as the “arsenal of democracy”.  After the war, car production resumed as normal.  The Ford Company went off to introduce many more cars and turned Ford into the brand people see today (Ford Rough Timeline).

Impact On The World

Henry Ford “put the world on wheels" by giving it the Model T (Henry Ford, Automotive). Henry helped develop America’s economy more in its early years (Henry Ford, biography.com). Mr. Ford also changed modern transportation by inventing the assembly line for his automobile. This made cars affordable so all could drive—this shaped roads and traffic. Most people would see this as positive, giving people quick transportation and all.  Without the assembly line the world would be so different.  The assembly line makes it quick, and easy to assemble anything so companies can save on manufacturing costs and pass savings on to the public.  Henry Ford also introduced fair corporate wages with his $5 daily wages.  Inflation has caused the value of a dollar to go down so $5 may not seem like a lot, but that is equal to $150 in this time's money! Ford revolutionized the automotive industry and transformed the world into what it is today. He was also among the leading men in fair wages and 40-hour weeks. Without this amazing man, the world would have less variety in the car industry.

What Was Learned

There is always a lesson to learn from any story, book, or life. Henry Ford failed many times including his first car business and some home experiments.  Henry also probably failed a lot at the self-equipped workshop he made as a kid, but Henry did not say “I quit” once, he kept going and loved it. Henry learned about mechanics and pursued what he was passionate about for his job. Ford is one of, the biggest, car companies in the USA. If that is not an inspiration to everybody, then nothing will be and nothing is. Henry Ford was a brilliant man who was motivated, smart, and amazing! Henry Ford was hit by roadblock after roadblock, wall by wall, but because he never gave up, the public has SUVs, vans, or electric cars today. Also, people probably think of cars when talking about Henry Ford, but he also invented more such as the assembly line which was one of the most important inventions in history. The story of Henry Ford may be like most others with problems solutions and triumphs over all, but it is hard to deny that it is a good story with a better moral to never give up because it could change the world.
