Students must be able to:

• Determine the reciprocal of a fraction

• Understand that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal

• Multiply a quantity by a fraction less than 1 or greater than 1 to determine if the product is increased or decreased

• Predict whether the product will increase or decrease when multiplying by a fraction (generate rule that multiplying by a fraction less than 1 will decrease product, multiplying by a fraction more than one will increase it)

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions (including those without common denominators) improper fractions, and mixed numbers fluently

• Apply properties of operations to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers fluently including real-world problems involving the four operations with fractions

• Apply fraction operations to problem situations

Teaching Tips

• Estimate and round fractions to whole numbers in order to check solution for reasonableness

• Demonstrate a clear understanding of adding and subtracting whole numbers, fractions (in simplest form) and decimals

• Use the least common multiple and greatest common factor to create common denominators and simplify fractions

• Convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed numbers

• Convert a whole number to an improper fraction
