OPERATIONS WITH FRACTIONS
AUG 25 - SEPT 5
Students must be able to:
Determine the reciprocal of a fraction
Understand that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal
Multiply a quantity by a fraction less than 1 or greater than 1 to determine if the product is increased or decreased
Predict whether the product will increase or decrease when multiplying by a fraction (generate rule that multiplying by a fraction less than 1 will decrease product, multiplying by a fraction more than one will increase it)
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions (including those without common denominators) improper fractions, and mixed numbers fluently
Apply properties of operations to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers fluently including real-world problems involving the four operations with fractions
Apply fraction operations to problem situations
Teaching Tips
Estimate and round fractions to whole numbers in order to check solution for reasonableness
Demonstrate a clear understanding of adding and subtracting whole numbers, fractions (in simplest form) and decimals
Use the least common multiple and greatest common factor to create common denominators and simplify fractions
Convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed numbers
Convert a whole number to an improper fraction
