ENGLISH III

TEACHER: Ms. Kaiser

Testing and planning calendar

Course Summary

This course will begin with a writing unit that will be used to evaluate students’ strengths and weaknesses. Other units include intensive reading of various authors integrated with the study of literary concepts and skills. In addition, helpful strategies will be presented in preparation for college admissions exams (TSIA, ACT, and SAT). English III is important for teaching students to communicate effectively, both in written and oral forms, and to show mastery of concepts studied during the previous two years of English instruction. A sampling of objectives and skills for the students include the following:

Writing -students will master evidence-based persuasive writing skills.

Language -students will gain confidence speaking in various situations and purposes.

Literature -students will identify and analyze various forms of literature, literary terms, and devices.

Reading -students will expand vocabulary and improve critical thinking skills such as drawing conclusions and making inferences.

Course Requirements

The textbook used is Study Sync Texas. To begin the year students will need a computer that is available to loan from Galena Park High School. Please encourage students to do work a computer as opposed to their phones. They will miss important links and concepts.

Grades

Tests, essays, and major projects count for 50% of the grade; daily work, homework, and quizzes count for 50%. Late work will be penalized -10 points per week. If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to make up the work within 2 days. After school tutorials will be available in my classroom (Room 1107) Mon.-Thurs. from 6:30-7:00 and 2:35-3:00.

Classroom Organization

Students are expected to respect not only the teacher, but also other classmates. Students are expected to contribute to an atmosphere where learning and thinking can take place, so our rules are positive: Be Punctual, Polite, Prepared, and Persistent.

Misc. Procedures

Progress reports will be sent home at the end of the third week of each six weeks grading period for every student who is not making satisfactory progress; however, if you are concerned or curious about your child’s progress for any reason, please call (832) 386-2799 or email akaiser@galenaparkisd.com to schedule a conference with me.
