Singapore Primary Math 6

Singapore Math's Primary Math, U.S. Edition series features the Concrete> Pictorial> Abstract approach. Students begin by learning through concrete and pictorial means before moving into abstract thought and development, which encourages an active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving. Lessons are designed for a mix of teacher instruction and independent work, and students are encouraged to discuss ideas and explore additional problem-solving methods.

Among other concepts covered at this level are graphs, algebraic expressions, geometry (e.g., radius, diameter and circumference of circles plus the volume of solids), advanced fractions, ratio, percents, tessellations, and lots of word problems including time/rate/distance problems. It might be challenging for parents with a weak math background to use this level without some assistance. Click to learn more.

Notes: This is a simple, but effective math curriculum. It can be very open-and-go, or you can really dive in using the provided Home Instructors guides.

Saxon Math 7/6

Saxon Math Homeschool 7/6 teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts.

Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 6/5, this Saxon 7/6 textbook introduces functions and coordinate graphing, integers, exponential expressions, and prime factorization. Students will specifically learn about the order of operations, number lines, decimal place value, how to find the percent of a number, how to round decimal numbers, attributes of geometric solids, and more.

Notes: Saxon Math is a dry presentation. The pages are devoid of color, but it has lots of reviews and is a well-respected curriculum.

Beast Academy

Beast Academy was designed as the math curriculum its creators wished they had when they were kids. It teaches kids how to think critically and understand the concepts behind the math calculations they’re performing. Engaging, comic-book style illustrations keep kids coming back for more, even as they grapple with some of the most rigorous math problems available anywhere. Do you want your child to embrace math as a problem-solving tool they'll use for the rest of their life? Beast Academy will take them there.

Beast Academy Online is a learning system that provides a complete curriculum for ages 8-13. The digital practice includes games, problems, and puzzles divided into chapters and units that follow the same sequence found in the Beast Academy book series. Click to learn more.

Teaching Textbooks Math 7

Designed specifically for homeschoolers, Teaching Textbooks 7 is designed for independent students, with the “teacher” and “textbook” elements combined. The online curriculum offers detailed instructions, fun illustrations, real-world examples, extensive review and already highlighted important concepts; and if your student gets stuck, there’s always the audiovisual step-by-step solutions for every one of the homework problems and quizzes! Students will listen to the lectures that explain new concepts, read the summary, work each problem, effectually be using all learning styles; or you can mix and match to suit your own personal needs. The program also includes automatic grading and feedback on every problem (great for time-stressed parents!) and animated lectures with lots of real world applications. There are even audio hints for some of the tougher problems! Fun, applicable and made just for you, the homeschooler!

Math 7 covers all of basic arithmetic, including fractions, decimals, and percents. The program also teaches a fair amount of geometry (e.g. how to find the area of a circle). Other topics include statistics and probability, simple graphing concepts, equations, and inequalities. There are even several chapters dedicated to math in the real world. Click to learn more.

Notes: Use a year ahead to stay at grade level. This is an online option that is a full math curriculum. The program teaches, grades and gives feedback to the student.

Math-U-See Zeta

Math-U-See is a skill-based, multi-sensory math curriculum for grades K-12. Designed to teach students specific skills in a definite, logical sequence, this systematic and cumulative approach will help students learn how to solve math problems and discover why they're solved in such a way.

The Zeta level covers decimals and percents by extending the student’s concept of place value to the right of the decimal point. The connection between fractions and decimals is also presented and metric conversions are introduced.

Notes: Math-U-See is a physical curriculum that is great for kids who are hands-on learners. It was written by and for homeschooling families. Levels focus heavily on one skill at a time. Workbooks are black and white. Students will pair MUS with the online program iReady, for a full math program.
