3rd Language Arts

LIGHTNING LITERATURE & COMPOSITION

The author's goal in writing this series is to "instill a love of great literature in children, expand their ability to read intelligently and deeply, improve their communication abilities, and prepare them for more advanced language arts concepts." The three key components to this series are literature, grammar and mechanics, and composition.

The Teacher Guide provides scripted questions for comprehension with answers, teaching tips, and daily schedules. You'll need something else for teaching spelling, learning to read, and penmanship.

The Student Workbook explains the lesson's concept for the child and includes Reading Journal Pages, Dictionary Pages, and Sentence Puzzle Pages. Workbook answers are in the Teacher's Guide. The Workbook and Guide can be purchased separately, in a set together, or in two different packs, one with and one without Random House Book of Poetry for Children. You'll need something else for teaching spelling, learning to read, and penmanship.

ALL ABOUT SPELLING 3

All About Spelling takes the struggle out of spelling! This curriculum teaches encoding skills, spelling rules, and multisensory strategies to help students become proficient spellers. This mastery-based curriculum is also appropriate to use with students who have dyslexia. Students beginning the program should start with Level 1 unless they've worked with a phonogram-based program previously.

In Level 3, students will learn 10 new phonograms, the jobs of Silent E, words with c+l-e syllables, contractions, homophones, consonant and vowel suffixes, and the past tense. Students continually review through four types of flashcards: Phonogram cards, sound cards, key cards (rules or generalization about spelling), and word cards. Students will also practice with letter tiles to internalize spelling concepts before working with pencil and paper and completing dictation-based exercises.  Click to learn more.

Notes: This is a parent-intensive spelling curriculum.

building writing skills level 1

This highly-effective 96-page book teaches narrative (personal and story), opinion, and informative/explanatory writing as a 5-step process. The 5-step process is made up of Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. The step-by-step lessons use examples and easy-to-understand concept maps that teach brainstorming, planning, editing, and revising. Each lesson is followed by practice that includes a simple, time-saving scoring rubric.   Click to learn more.

Grammar

easy grammar grade 3

Start by learning a list of prepositions? Unusual, yes, but effective. Then, by identifying and crossing out prepositional phrases, students can see the core of each sentence. Covering parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence writing, concepts are presented in small, understandable increments, followed by plenty of practice. The overall approach is mastery, utilizing a system of sentence labeling rather than diagramming. Correcting/grading is easy, requiring a minimum of teacher time and might be done by the student himself (with supervision).

Grade 3 introduces 28 prepositions and the process of deleting prepositional phrases.

Vocabulary

wordly wise 3000

The Student Workbooks contain 20 lessons each with fifteen words. Each lesson includes a Word List with complete dictionary type of entry information, a Finding Meanings exercise (choose two phrases to form a sentence that correctly uses a word), the Just the Right Word exercise (replace a phrase with a single word), an Applying Meanings exercise (using words in context), a Word Study exercise (covers synonyms, antonyms, suffixes, prefixes, and analogies), and a Passage (classic and contemporary authors) with follow-up questions.  Click to learn more.
