Children are natural scientists, they are constantly asking us "why", "how", and make wonderful observations. There are so many things out there for you and your child to explore! Here are some basic topics you could do a study on. (It is most beneficial to focus on one topic for a couple weeks to really deepen their understanding on the subject). Remember to try to pick something that your child has shown interest in. If you are not sure, give your child 3 choices and have them pick what they would like to know more about.
Germs
Trees/Leaves
Rocks
Apples
Pumpkins
Magnets
Plants
Oceans, Lakes, Ponds, or Rivers
Weather
Recycling (Earth Day)
Insects
Space
Dinosaurs
Animals
Sink and Float
Weight and Measurement
Gravity
My Body/ Healthy Eating
Dentist/ Doctors
And many more....
After you picked your topic you will have to gather some materials:
Books/Magazines/Articles
Pictures/Videos (you can find so much online but please watch the video fully before showing it to your child)
Materials for any activities/ projects
Journal to write down any observations
Field Trips (even just to the backyard!)
Science can build your child's knowledge of the world around them and it can also expand their vocabulary! When looking at a topic make sure to point out important words and talk about what they mean in a child friendly way. For example, if you decide to learn about butterflies, you may learn the word chrysalis by wrapping your child up in a blanket and talking about how the chrysalis protects the butterfly while it changes. You can explain vocabulary through words, pictures, or movement.
It is also important to start using science language, with words such as experiment, observation, hypothesis, conclusion, and data.
