Competency-Based Education

What is Competency-Based Education (CBE)?

Competency-based education refers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and reporting based on learners demonstrating their application of the knowledge, skills, and work habits that they have learned.

Competency-based learning is characterized by clearly defined learning targets, called competencies, that are built on state or national standards and aligned to high quality, balanced assessments.  A competency-based grading system seeks to provide meaningful feedback so both students and families can track student progress toward mastery of key academic concepts, reflect upon strengths and weaknesses, and identify multiple pathways to deeper learning.

Why Competency-Based Education (CBE)?

Competency-based education has been required of all school districts by the NHDOE starting in 2008 (Ed 306.26 and Ed 306.27).

Beyond the legal mandate, however, competency-based education or learning is recognized as best practice:  it helps students develop and demonstrate mastery over a topic, builds a culture of equity and inclusivity, and prepares students for life beyond the walls of their school.  CBE is about empowering students to apply or transfer their learning in ways that will echo what will be asked of them in college, careers, and life in general.
