This resource, written by Lori Copeland, Ph. D is a great story to use with children who have challenges with self-regulation in the classroom. The remote control is a concrete tactile resource that can be used to teach the abstract concepts of how to curb impulsivity and improve self monitoring.
The eight buttons on the remote control include the following:
I used this resource with students in my self contained classroom. Each had a remote control on their desktop. They were guided to use the buttons to problem solve when they were experiencing challenges in demonstrating self-control. These buttons were not taught all at once, as each one was used in various activities and discussions when they were relevant to situations the students found themselves in. This remote control would not be for everyone to use in a larger mainstream classroom. It would support one tool as a universal strategy: "Good for all; but necessary for some"
