Social skills are life long skills that we truly value in our room.
We will be learning about how to solve social problems using strategies inspired by Kelso's Choices, a program that encourages students to solve "small problems" through trying at least two of the following strategies:
Go to another game or activity.
Share and take turns.
Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other.
Walk away from the problem.
Ignore the problem behaviour.
Tell the person to stop the problem behaviour.
Apologize.
Make a deal or compromise.
Wait to cool off.
In order to figure out if it is a small or big problem, students must first ask themselves: "Am I hurt? Is someone else hurt?"
If the answer is "Yes", they need to go to an adult right away. However, if the answer is "No", they can use the above strategies. This program helps to reduce tattling and helps to increase independent problem solving.
In using this program, we hope students will develop effective problem-solving skills that they can use again and again to resolve small problems.
