Mailbags
We use email as our main form of communication. We will provide a ziploc bag to transport shared reading doutangs.
Shared Reading
At the end of each week, a new Shared Reading will go home in your child's green Shared Reading doutang. Your child will be familiar with the text as we do various activities throughout the week with it. Please listen carefully as your child reads the text to you. Although it may appear your child has merely memorized the text, s/he is actually learning many beginning reading skills that will help him/her become a fluent reader.
How you can support your child at home with Shared Reading texts:
Please allow your child to read (and reread!) the text to you
Encourage your child to follow along with their finger (this helps build knowledge of 1:1 correspondence with words and builds directionality)
Go on letter and/or word hunts (feel free to have your child circle and highlight away!)
Count how many words are in each sentence
Look for and talk about capitals and punctuation
Encourage your child to make a picture to go with the text
Talk about the text:
o What does the text remind you of?
o What do you picture in your head when you read?
o What do you know about the topic?
