Welcome to Philosophy!
Philosophy is a fascinating and deeply relevant field of study that touches on nearly every aspect of our lives, thinking and analysis. It helps us to ask questions, think creatively and outside the box, and to hone our communication and persuasive skills.
But that barely scratches the surface... Why should you study philosophy? There are many reasons,
As explained by the University of Toronto, "Many people are interested in picking up the intellectual skills philosophy has to offer. Philosophy courses offer you the potential of learning how to become more creative, and to think more carefully: to understand texts or chains of reasoning without getting bamboozled; to assemble the data for yourself and draw your own conclusions about what they show. Philosophy courses strive to improve your writing and make you come across as more polished and more authoritative."
Interestingly this explanation offers a very pragmatic, skills based assessment of why philosophy is important, which may reveal something about ourselves and our motivations. But an alternative reason might just as readily be about questioning our assumed circumstances and patterns of thought, or in attempting to better understand revealed truth and reality.
We will be digging deeper into this question and its complications in the section below:
About me:
My name is Joel Booker. I like cycling, hiking, board games, reading, hockey, basketball, and baseball. I grew up along the north shore of Lake Huron where in order to prove our mettle we would be required to wrestle a polar bear to the death with our bear hands.
I have my Master of Arts in History from Western University, my Honours Bachelor of Arts from Wilfrid Laurier University, and my Bachelor of Education from Western University.
I have worked as a professor at Fanshawe College, a technology associate at St Joseph's Health Centre (in Blind River) and an entrepreneur.
I'm looking forward to teaching you this semester and growing with you. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.
