Cake and Cookie Showcase:
For those families new to Stoney Creek (or those who need a refresher), each spring the school hosts this event. Families who wish to donate a cake, cookies, cupcakes can do so by bringing in their cake (with ingredient list) to the school early on the Wednesday. Each student gets 1 free ticket, extras cost .25. The entire sheet sent home is $5. We are asking parents to fill in their child’s name and teacher (Aris) on tickets prior to the day and send in the cash with tickets. Each class goes down and tours all the donations and get to put tickets into bags of the cake they wish to win. Winning tickets are pulled out of the bag at the end of the day and cakes go home with winners that day.
Leprechaun Activities:
I put on a big production next week about a family of leprechauns that visit Stoney Creek each year from Ireland. It sparks the kids imagination and creativity. I tell the children all about leprechauns (they are small, friendly, dress in green and LOVE to play tricks on people BUT have never been caught by a human). I tell them the legend how if you catch a leprechaun, you get a pot of gold. Of course this is all fictious but I really hype it up and get the kids on a mission to help try and catch the leprechaun(s) so that we can get the pot of gold. We make humane traps so we can meet them. Of course though, they outsmart us, while playing some pranks on us so be prepared to hear some silly stories next week from your kids. If you wish to tell your child that leprechauns are not real, if you don’t mind telling them that we are just having fun with it and to keep that information to themselves so the rest of the kids can pretend.

Dear Families:
February is a VERY busy month and it zips by in no time. I’ve listed some of the upcoming events/holidays we will be discussing in class. As for Valentine’s Day, it’s an “all or nothing” situation. If your child chooses to hand out Valentine’s, please give to all the students or none. (Just think how your child would feel if they were the one left out). In Kindergarten, we are all friends. There are 25 students in the class. Please have your child print (or an adult can print it) their name in the “From” part. DO NOT fill out the “to” part, as the kids can’t read names yet (for the most part) and Jenn and I would be handing out 25 sets of Valentine’s. Your child can then just distribute their Valentine’s without having to read names.
In Language, we are still working on CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words (like “sun”) and sight words. For most year 1 students we are working on identifying the letters in the words and that letters make up words.
In math, we spent the last week or two discussing 2 D flat shapes (circle, square, oval, rectangle, hexagon, diamond). This week we will be looking at 3D solids (sphere, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid). Again, the students are introduced to this topic and these words. They are not expected to know all these names and how to print them, it’s just exposure and they catch on little by little. In Grade 1 (end of year), they need to know those names/qualities of the shapes/solids, so no worries if they are still learning.
Candy Bags-The Developmental Class will be selling candy bags for $2.00 on Wednesday next week. Proceeds go to fund outings they go on. Candy bags will be sent home with children who buy them.

Just another reminder, please send your child with boots and snowpants each day. It may be dry some days, but we do spend a lot of time outside. Also, check in with us or pop in to see if your child needs more added to their “change of clothes” bag many of the students have at school. (especially lots of socks)
If you have not sent in a sock (or two) for our Holiday snowman craft we are doing, please do so early next week as we will be starting that craft soon. A colourful or holiday sock would be best as a white one would be a little plain.
Monday Subitizing (math)
Subitizing is a beginning skill in number sense. It helps the students quickly count, looking for patterns. For example, groups of 2, 3, 5, etc. For example, 5 in tally marks looks distinct, so a group of 5 tally marks, the students should know after a quick glimpse on a card that it is 5.
Instructions: On recipe/index cards, put a number up to 10 with tally marks. Then, turn the pile face down. Quickly show your child the tally marks, then put it back face down. Ask your child, “How many?” See how accurate they were with just a quick glimpse. Then, count the tallies. (Their predictions should get better as you continue).

Review these sounds and think of a word that begins with these blends. For example, br-brown. This can be done orally.

Now that we have completed reviewing the alphabet twice, the kids should (year 2) know the alphabet and sounds the letters make and year 1, should know some of the letters/sounds. Parent Teacher Interviews:
Thanks to everyone who met with us to discuss the first report card. Jenn and I were talking afterwards and I have been so impressed with the parents over the last 10 years. You all are doing a great job with your children and what I find most helpful is that everyone is realistic with “who” their child is and great at acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses. It is so easy working with families when we all work together on a common goal, which is your child, so thank you.
Language:
We just finished our second go through of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Over the next couple of weeks,we are going to be looking at CVC words (consonant vowel consonant). Words like dog, cat, run, etc. This does not mean to stop looking at the letters and the sounds, but this is the next step. For year 1 students, read the words we are looking at and have them repeat the word to you, for year 2 students, please try reading them, sounding them out and printing them.

Thursday, November 13th from 4-7 PM (in 15 minute time slots) and Friday, November 14th
from 8:30 AM-11:00 AM. I know you have not seen the report cards yet, but we do like to
meet with all parents to discuss your child’s progress to date. (We can also meet at 8:30AM
any morning during the week if that works better for you). I will be sending home a form on
Monday with interview time requests to pick your first, second and third choice of times. I
do this in advance so that families that I can give your interview time to the teachers
if you have other children at the school so that hopefully they can schedule you a time
before or after your interview with Mrs. Peterson and myself. We also offer phone interviews
during these times if that is easier for you (although we do encourage in person interviews,
if possible)

General Information
Sniffle season is here! Just a reminder (especially after Covid), please try and keep your child at home if they are unwell. The kids pass things along quickly and we want to do our best to keep everyone healthy.
Fire Safety Month-I was informed last week that after one of my lessons about fire safety, we talked about the dangers of hiding. Some of the students may have interpreted me saying that it is good to hide (We also had a lockdown drill the same day as this lesson and we had to hide). Just to be transparent and so that everyone is safe, could you please review with your child your homes fire safety plan (Don’t have one? Perfect time to create one). Also, please remind the kids that my message is: GET OUT and NEVER to hide.
Language and Math-We are wrapping up our first run through the alphabet next week looking at the letters Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy and Zz. Any practice on identifying the letters, printing the letters, and saying the sounds the letters make will be beneficial for all. In math, we have been practicing representing the numbers 1-10 in many ways. Two weeks ago, we really focused on using tally marks, last week was ten frames and this week will be showing the numbers 1-6 on a di(ce).
Heggerty-We have started our Heggerty reading program. For those year 1 students/parents, here is some information about the program. It is a repetitive phonics program we do daily (about 5 minutes). I will include one ask me question each week and it will follow the examples we do in Heggerty so you can see at home how well your child does. It looks at things like: the beginning sound of words, end sound of words, removing parts of words, adding parts to words, etc.

Tuesday Fire Safety
October is fire safety prevention month. We really focus on trying to let the kids know never never hide in the house somewhere if there is a fire. GET OUT! That being said, the kids are being asked if your family has a fire safety plan and a meeting place outside if there was ever a fire.

In math, we are focusing on the numbers 6-10, counting and representing those numbers in different ways (as tally marks, in a ten frame, on your fingers, etc.). We are also reading the book “Apples up on top” (a great book for counting and reviewing the numbers to 10).
